The neutered wandering cat

My 9-10 yr old neutered TOM is indoor/ outdoor but is most happy to get out everyday - In past he has stayed away around 30-36 hrs on occasion , but always came home - Recently gone 10 days - I posted flyers in the area, and that is what brought him back as a family took him in & cleaned him up & nurtured him on around day 4 when he was hanging out & appeared wounded after a cat fight - They called me on day 10 after seeing my flyer At a local store - He might have come home on his own had he not been taken in & not let out , but even 4 days ( when they took him in ) is still concern & out of character for him & his habits to have not returned home sooner - My concern now is , will he go back or why would he not go back - They have 2 indoor cats that he spent around 5-6 days with & he was loved & fed !! He is now home 2 days & begging to go out but trying to keep him in for as long as we both can stand it - This cat really gets depressed & restless if he does not get out - I try very hard to let him out during day but get him in at night but he does not always make Curfew & bends the rules time to time - This cat came to me around age 4 & I fed him thru a New England winter maybe 4-5 days each week & then he walked thru the door one rainy summer day looked around & stayed ! That was 5 yrs ago & he was socialized, well groomed & neutered ! I tried to find his family but no one was looking for him - So he came with the history of being out & had an established life style that I have tried to respect to a point - The lovely couple who took him in has agreed they will call me if he or when he comes back & stays too long - Does anyone think we may now have to accept Co-Parenting !! I do not want this situation but am very afraid this is what might occur ! He is going to choose his time out there - Any advice or thoughts appreciated - Thanks - Di/ Milo's Mom

You can look after a cat, but you never really own it. If you force him to say indoors, he might get used to it, but if you let him out, he'll use his own cat-logic to make the decision to stick around or leave.

Why are you so concerned about him wandering back to where he was? From what you say, it sounds like he was well cared for there, so I guess it's not because you're concerned about his well-being. Is it because you think he owes you for taking him in and looking after him?

If you want loyalty and gratitude from a pet, get a dog. Cats just don't work that way.

Thanks for your opinion & taking the time to express it - Keep in mind assuming something or being a bit unkind benefits no one - Have a good night 🐱

    Are you writing a book,
    Or asking a question?

He sounds a lot my cat. I can't keep him in all the time either. He is very happy going outside a lot. Yours also reminds me of my sister's who vanished last month after a cat fight. Would like to think someone is caring for her cat too. It's great your cat has a safe place to go as long as they are not going to just keep him – why not let him come and go as he wishes.

Thanks Noid, yes I am grateful for that couple & hopefully we do have an agreement that they will call me if he returns & hangs too long - I do hope they don't take him in if it keeps happening & just keep him in ! Loosely I made a joke about Co-Parenting Milo if need be ! Great if they feel the need to give him a meal & call me , but not just keep him - I gave them a lovely gift as a thank You , so they know I am grateful & want to at least know where he is & safe but do want him back - He had a 4 yr mystery life before he entered my life - Maybe like a lot of Males, he gets the 4-5 year itch to move on !!!!! Thanks - Di

Noid, I forgot to add, I let him out this morning after being home here, 4 days & that couple had him in house about 5 days, so poor guy has been housebound around 9-10 days total & that is not his life style at all - Had to let him go at some point ! Nice spring weather & only time will tell - At least I now have an idea of where he maybe likes to hang - Thanks Again - Di

I doubt he will stay over there all the time, but that may be his new place to visit.
