What a wonderful world it could be in America if we were like our European counterparts. Our happiness and quality of life would soar.
Imagine if we had universal basic income, free childcare and pre-K, increased food stamps, universal low cost housing, free college and vocational programs, paid leave for new parents, increasing Social Security payments, more mental healthcare funding, and healthcare for all.
And we probably could do this by reducing out defense and prison spending by half and stop sending monies to foreign nations. Just half. And probably not raising taxes on anyone.

    Americans are fundamentally different from europeans. We have a high priority on individualism here. So public goods that raise taxes are not considered good for those who dont use said services.

    Its widly known that the american goverment sucks at money management. There is little public trust in the goverment running these programs well. So increasing funding for programs that's run by an incompetent goverment turns a lot of stomachs.

      Thank you! I been saying this forever but people just take it as "Oh you hate the greater good". Adding money to the pot of these already poorly managed system is like putting gas in a car with a shot transmission and no wheels. Yeah the car is low on gas but just cuase ya keep adding gas to it don't change it needs wheels and a transmission. Than everyone pointing out the transmission and wheel issues are told "You just don't care about the car!" I mean we do but we not stupid enough to keep throwing gas in it hoping that will fix everything.

        When people turn to "universal healthcare" I ask them about thier latest time at the dmv. Because that's about as efficiently run as the goverment can do. Now imagine that but with your healthcare.

        I got my healthcare when I was in the navy through the goverment. You know why the VA gets so much flak? Its because they suck so God damn much at their jobs, get the shittiest medicine and make you wait months for your prescriptions.

        They gave me meds that not only increased the chances of getting a stroke by 40% but also they required me to dose myself at 10% of each injectables capacity and toss the rest. Meds that they could of tossed me that would be actually effective costs 3$ more and I wouldnt toss the excess.

        That's why I give zero fucks about universal healthcare. If I leave it to the goverment they will just kill me faster.

          To be fair we already have healthcare like that and it still cost an arm and a leg. Honestly, it would be nice if we have DMV time waits that we at least be covered consistently. That being said they originally did healthcare for Obamacare through a website and considering how flakey websites can be I am willing to bet even if we did it the government will FIND A WAY TO RUIN EVERYTHING! Our government is retarded I don't trust them with anything. Most places were straight up banned any kind of medical service during the pandemic though and I find it ridiculous how stupid the American system is at handling these type of problems. "Oh no everyone is sick, I guess we just ban anyone from going to the hospital, even though we just told every company in America they could fire people for taking a sick day and not having a doctors note".

    The US is a corporation. Ran by like 10 companies. There will never be any change. And we’re all “the USA is the best” so no one ever leaves. And if we do leave, we still pay taxes for being technically civilians.

    We can only hope for the government to implode and the rest of the rich to go with it.

      If the top 1% pays 50% of all the taxes to the government whos gonna pay for the welfare if they leave? If the rich all die tomorrow your 401k goes to shit. I agree theres problems but we dont want the rich to go. Everyones 401k would go down by 95% and it would cause all kinds of problems

        Even if the rich leave, they still have to pay taxes from anywhere they live in the world. Every year. Still file taxes. Until they renounce U.S. citizenship.

    The tax rates in Europe are absolutely unbelievable. It only benefits the ppl with low paying jobs. If I lived there (im middle class) between sales tax and income tax I will pay a good 70% of my money to the government. You keep very little money you make there. And the rich barely pay more than the middle class.

    Its a great place to be if youre a loser. But if youre a competitive person and you like high wages, cheaper food, cheaper houses, less taxes America is 100x better.

    There are plenty of countries outside of Europe that offer these things as well.
    South American countries, Asian nations, even Russia has most of this.

    In Russia, we pay a flat tax of 13% of personal income. You can deduct from this.
    I pay Self-employed tax, which is 6% tax on profits.
    I also pay land tax for agricultural land at 0.3% for my property, and another 0.3% housing for my vacation home.
    In the USSR, citizens paid between 10%-13% of their income in taxes. Housing tax was still 0.3% in the USSR. We had better services and more accommodations back then.

    Russia gives you $7,300 USD for the birth of your first child, $2,300 USD for the second, and $7,000 USD of your mortgage paid back to you for the third
    We have free education, Pre-K to (most) universities
    We have free health care
    You can apply for a free apartment, though the wait is long for acceptance.

    You do not need to pay 99.99% of your income to taxes to have the most basic of necessities met. This is a lie told to people to scare them away from socialist policies.

          I seriously doubt that I am older than you. I was never taught anything about base 5, outside of tally marks. Base 5 seems like it would be an incredibly inefficient method of writing numbers.

        I have recently done quite a bit of reading on them. In particular, the arguments of the Antifederalists against the Constitution are very interesting, mostly because practically everything they predicted would happen under the Constitution came true, and the arguments of the Federalists were pretty much "nah, that won't happen; you're just pessimistic." I'm fairly certain most of the Federalists wouldn't have ratified the Constitution if they knew that what the Antifederalists were predicting was actually going to come true.

          You do realize that "The Articles of Confederation" failed in that it had no way to do an effective foreign policy and several other major flaws that were creating real problems for the young USA. That is why the "Constitutional Convention" that wrote the basis of our current Constitution was called.

          Returning to it would again return to the same failures that existed back then - only they would be magnified by modern trade and foreign relations.

            You can read what people were actually saying about the Articles of Confederation. There were very few actual problems that anyone was experiencing. The Constitutional Convention was only there to write up a few Amendments, presumably to fix those few problems. When it turned into the "Constitutional Convention" a fifth of the delegates walked out, wanting nothing to do with it. If the government were that problematic, they would have stayed, and the votes to ratify the Constitution would not have been so close.

            There were no actual failures, and if there were any, the government would have had to have been around for a bit longer under the Articles to be able to show them.

              That's one side - from those who walked out.

              Most of the other attendees at the Constitutional Convention saw the problems developing and knew how they would likely develop, and felt that they needed to fix things before things got really bad.

              You can read that as well in the histories.
