The use of "lol"....

I think people on the internet have been misusing "lol" for a long time. They put it at the end of all their sentences even if it's evidently not a situation to "laugh out loud" about. For example: "you will get over the death of your mother eventually. Lol".

is it normal or am I too old (in my thirties) to be using the internet and/or getting annoyed by this, lol?

I think in your example lol might have meant "lots of love". That's what my mam thought it meant:P. I agree, though. It's annoying. And in those cases it's usually the most mundane crap. Wow, you're in a Supermarket? That is *so* lol-worthy! Pfft.

    • Sounds like a good alternative. The issue would still exist though. Lots of love should be written differently like: "lolv"

"Lots of love" would certainly be a great alternative translation!

      LOL

yeah its actually used to punctuate sentences now for some reason. I've noticed it seems to be used when someone is perhaps nervous or edgy about what they're typing or commenting on, so that it takes the edge off it and is not misconstrued as being overly serious about something.

I think it's just a way for most people to end a sentence or say if something is awkward which now that I think of it is weird haha ahhh I do it too but with haha instead :S

I use it to try and offset awkwardness sometimes. In fact, that's the most common usage for me :P

I agree, a lot of people don't actually lol. I think instead they just get a smirk, which isn't bad, but just not a lol.

    • I'm a little disappointed you didn't put "lol" at the end

Should I delete the comment so I can do that? lol

It's probably kids that lol alot. At least I don't write lol after such a tiny amount of lol essence you need an electron microscope to see it. Lots of things are better deadpan, don't you think? Like "should I delete the comment so I can do that"

Sometimes it bothers me, but I can't talk. I use lol in an abundant amount.

"Hey, what are u up to, lol"
    "nm"
    "im tired lol"
    "ah, good night"
    "lol, night"

I hate it. I never use it. It used to make my skin crawl...well it still does to a point, but oversaturation means the effect is less so.

Yay, OP! You and me can be old fuddy-duddy's together, and shake our walking sticks at the language these young whippersnappers are using! Kids these days! I tell you!

    :D

i never ever used it and i will never use it ... its so so common and yes as you said its over used ...even if the things not really funny they say that as if its a part of a social etiquette and without it the person would get offended...

    * the reason i don't use it is not that its common but because it means something in my language and whenever i read it or if i write it that meaning comes in my mind and its not nice for me....
