The use of the word "whilst"?

Does anyone else smile when somebody uses this word? I don't know why, but it makes me laugh every time I see it.

It's funny :D 16

I love it when someone says whilst like Supernanny, it sounds so charming and proper.

"Whilst" is no longer in common usage in American English (and probably others too), even in formal settings.

So, yeah, it's funny, because whoever uses it just wants sound smart.

I use it sometimes when it's going to sound silly, like to be overly dramatic in an otherwise goofy scenario.

One may want to laugh whilst one types a sentence regarding the humour of the word whilst. hhah

It's mostly a British thing. It's basically the same as 'while'. I've never heard it used, but I have read it in some stories on fictionpress and fanfiction.net.

I love the word whilst. "I'm watching Transformers with my nephew whilst writing this. :)" It's beautiful & elegant.

I've heard of 'whilst' before, but no one, not even me, uses it. We're not sure what it even means, frankly.

  • It's not really that funny, but I use it whilst speaking with others.

  • I use it when I say something like "Whilst they get away with a slap on the wrist!"

I think it's just another good alternative to while.

While and whilst are just like among and amongst; the Middle English version doesn't get used much any more and sounds a bit odd. I'm always amused when people refer to their rear ends as their fundament.
