My 2yr old son has to have a stuffy with a tag when he gets tired. He sucks his left thumb, while holding the stuffy's tag with the same hand. Or he rubs the tag in his ear. The bigger the tag the better. Is this normal?
I have a younger sibling who did that before falling asleep all throughout childhood. They outgrew it by the time they were a teenager.
It's only a problem if the child is sucking their thumb often enough that it is affecting the way their adult teeth are growing in.
Perhaps this is not exactly the way most children do this, but it is certainly in the ball park. I wouldn't be at all worried by this behavior unless it continues beyond 5 or so. There was someone on IIN who sucked their thumb at 22ish, and IMO, that is way abnormal and that person should see a therapist.
