To be afraid of people in burqa/niqab/full covering

This is not to be racist or whatever, I'm sure they're nice people underneath all that, but it's literally scary to me. I was walking to class and came around a corner to 2 people in full black religious coverings(not sure what it's called), only their eyes showing, and my heart jumped a little, and maybe I did slightly, too. Is that normal?

btw this is nothing to do with racial stereotypes. it is just the sight of someone completely covered like that is scary. idk why.

It isn't a common sight. Humans are generally uncomfortable or unsettled when confronted by things and experiences and people out of their "comfort zone" for lack of better terminology.

Also, there's probably further psychological reasons as to association with negativity...dark fairy tales etc, the whole "black hooded" figure being scary, dangerous, etc.

I'm just making assumptions based on my limited knowledge of human psychology. I have no evidence of this, but I think it is a reasonable theory to put forward.

So basically, parts of what you and RainbowFlash already discussed.

You should be more afraid of people wrapped in flags, with a gun in one hand and a bible in the other.

It is racial profiling, no matter how much you protest that it is not. You are 'afraid' they have a bomb or mean to do you harm, because of all that we have been taught since 9/11.
