American Pit Bull Terrier's were bred for DA, so they can be very prone to both dog and animal aggression; however they should not be HA (human aggressive.) There are some lines that do display HA however, but it is not the breed standard.
Personally I would not trust a random pit bull on the street that I don't know (especially if I have my own dog with me) because a lot of pit bull owners do not know how to properly raise and train such a high strung breed nor know how to responsibly handle a DA and AA prone breed. A lot of pit bull's are out of control and destructive because of this, which is why pit bulls seem to always be the ones reported in attacks or bite cases.
Irresponsible owners make aggressive, unstable dogs and there seems to be a lot of irresponsible owners owning pit bulls. A pit bull is not for the average owner or someone with little to no experience in dogs; a pit bull needs an experienced owner who actually knows what they're doing and how to safely contain, discipline and control such a breed. If you're going to go out and get a pit bull and treat it like a human baby or treat it like a small chihuahua you have no business in owning one; because that is what leads to out of control and untrained pit bulls. Pit Bulls need an owner that is actually going to responsibly train and control them for the safety of the dog and others around it.
Pit Bulls are working dogs, they were bred for bloodsports and pit fighting but are now usually used as hunting dogs for hogs or other animals. You treat a working dog like it should be treated, you train it properly and give it a job and there should be no problems. You treat it like some human baby and give it little to no discipline and baby it you're destroying that working dog and it's going to become an unstable destructive mess of a dog.
My neighbor actually just picked one up bc it was walking down the road in the dark while it was raining. The dog jumped right into the car. He took it home and called a shelter where they ran his chip and called the owners for pickup. It’s a shame to think that people would do that for a different dog based on breed. The dogs name was Hank.
I was bitten by one two months ago. Just puncture wounds and a mild muscle injury but it took a good while to heal and for the muscle not to be sore anymore. The top of my thumb is still a little bit numb. The reason it bit me was I was walking down that street and it was loose in the front yard and came over to investigate my small dog and wanted to get her and I kept moving her away and finally I picked her up and so then it bit my arm. All it did was bite down. It could’ve been so much worse but a neighbor came out and scared it away.
Have you seen some of the pictures online what they have done to other peoples’ arms? Some of those incidents were when the person got involved to stop a disagreement between dogs.
I have lived in pet friendly neighborhoods with pitbulls and other cats and dogs. They got along. Then in my current neighborhood where occasionally they get loose from other streets and once a group of three came and killed cats. They can be very friendly but they are capable of a lot of damage and I really don’t trust them anymore.
It's normal. They have been bread for territorial and aggressive tendencies however if raise decently they are fine animals. How could you not love this:

They are only banned cause the look intimidating. Theres no such thing as a bad pit. Judt a bad owner. They are a common fighting dog cause they look fierce. Fighting dogs are forced and beaten. They rang like that naturally. They are also one of the weakest of fighting dogs. Plenty have way stronger jaws. Anyways pits are one of the sweetest most loving creatures you will ever meet. Seriously one of ths most loyal and well behaved animals on the planet. They are wonderful with children as well.
If you ever have the chance to meet a pit I highly recommend it. Itll help you get over your fear. Dog 0arks are a great place. If you see one talk yo the owner. Theyll happily tell you why your fear is unfounded and those laws are bullshit.
Great danes are another feared breed. They are litterly nicknamed gentle giants. Yes if you threaten there pack they can and will tuck your shit up. But they are also the biggest pussies ever. Someone new walks up its common for them to hide behind you tail between legs. They are easily scared beautiful creatures that want nothing more than to sit on your lap and drool all over you. They do have a very very very strong jaw however so dont attack one. You'll regret it.
Seriously I could talk about bulls and great danes all day. I dont know if you are familar with me but anyone on here can inform you I love love love large dogs and am fairly educated on them.
Maybe go on a pitbull group In facebook. You'll see there real side. You'll probably fall in love with them 2
Pitbulls are feared because of their ability to do damage. The ones I have been around were laid back. Mostly they wanted two things - attention and for you to drop some of whatever you were eating.
Pit bulls don't feel the need to prove anything, unlike some pitiful small breeds like a Chihuahua. Those things snarl and bark and act like tough shit but if you say "BOO!" at them, they jump out of their own fur and run for the hills. No one is afraid of them cause Chihuahuas cannot do much other than bite your ankles.
I still cannot figure out what my dog (Dart) is.
He is identical to an Icelandic sheep dog but 20 pounds heavier than normal, even though he is not fat. He was left to me, and over 10 years old so not in the best health nor appearance but a few years ago was. Dart's best friend was a cat we used to have.
This is very close to what he looks like, or did st one point - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/74/Icelandic_Sheepdog_Alisa_von_Lehenberg.jpg
Phones being stupid I'll check out llink 2morrow when I'm on mg computer, whatever he is he sounds adorable. And you are absoloutly right. I personally cant stand ankle biters. German Shepard's and labs dont get a bad rap wich is good just silly cause theyll hold there ground to. But yea if I remember right pits have locking jaws. Not something you want to get caught in. Shame they are so hated thougu
Them type of dogs are an abomination. Dogs bite for many reasons but when a pit bull is killing a child or ripping someones face of they love it, they wag their tails as they rip something apart and just kill for the fun of it. Something like a JSD only bite out of fear or protection, unless they are one of them filthy police trained mutts.
I keep it as a general rule that I only keep animals that I know 100% i could kill it barehanded. I dont like pitbulls because I am not 100% sure I could kill one. It's like 85% I think if I punched it in the flat face I think I could get the upper hand.
Pit bulls are not typically as bad as their rep would suggest.
Most are just pretty standard looking dogs, some are pretty mean looking though.
I think people may be afraid is because they are capable of more damage than other breeds of similar size.
All animals are dangerous, especially those that can kill you.
Yes they are pretty dangerous. If you'd like a nice "big" dog that is pretty safe, I'd suggest a collie. Really lovable animal.
If they're a normal person's pet not too scary, but if feral that's another story
No they aren't dangerous with the right training. It depends entirely on the owner, it's always their fault if their dog is agressive unless it has issues just like humans can that makes them unreliable. That said certain breeds definietely have a reputation about them and for a reason. All breeds have different tempers and it definietely takes the right owner to raise a more agressively tempered dog right.
I can relate OP. Pit bull looks intimidating as fuck especially with it's ugly-looking face compared to other dogs in my personal view. I can't for the life of me would try to risk getting closed to one even though it's somebody else's pet. Pets can still be ferociously unpredictable despite getting tamed so when it comes to pit bull, it gets multiple times scarier.
It's just a matter of preference and subjectivity. I personally find pit bulls hideous and scary more than adorable, not going to sugarcoat my thought. If you find them adorable, more power to you.
I used to think that until I learned what a Cane Corso and also a Neopolitan Mastiff are. THOSE things a huge, scary ugly, horrendous beasts. My neighbors have one of each. Of course my neighbors are weirdo-ass paranoid dipshits anyways. I hate those nasty things. the neighbors and their stinky kennel.
Dogs are not something to be afraid of unless the dog is actively threatening you (growling, flashing teeth, etc). A fear of dogs is completely irrational. Get over yourself and go pet some pitbulls at petsmart or something. I honest to god don't understand how you could be afraid of these dogs unless you have never actually interacted with one before.
Dogs are wolves. They have the potential to kill people. Some breeds are stronger than others. It all depends on the situation, the dog's upbringing, how you are behaving etc.
I personally love dogs, and most I have encountered have had a really sweet side, but I have also encountered the occasional dangerous one. I don't think the breed is particularly relevant.
Unpopular opinion: pitbulls and other viciously classified dogs are like guns. It’s not the item or animal that is dangerous, but the person who uses or trains the animal that is dangerous.
You could train any dog to attack if one so desired to.
I mean yes alot of people are scared of big dogs or just any animal in general, most of them arent dangerous but they can be, some will just go up to you and attack you, oh yeah theyre aggressive but I doubt theyll harm you, theyre really nice, also I have a Pitbull. But yeah its very normal
