Seems a lovely place! I guess only US Republicans will dislike the "socialist" thing. A lot of them are afraid of helping the poor :P

I love it. Aside from the positives you listed I think it is also a beautiful place. I went to Calgary for a weekend and not only was the city clean and beautiful but all the people seemed to be as well.

Most people don't think about Canada to be honest because Canada doesn't stand in any spotlight, has a very, very low population (ESPECIALLY considering its size as the second biggest country in the world) and Canada does not usually do anything notable to merit attention. So I voted indifference. I do have plenty of good Canadian friends though. I'd never move there because I hate cold while America has a vast diversity of climate, terrain and things to do. Something for everybody. Unlike Canada.

Canada is part of the commonwealth i.e. was once part of the British Empire hence it has many British qualities such as laws, free healthcare for all, joined world war 2 when it started and not half way through like the yanks. Also, like England, it has quite a middle standard of living for all not huge riches on the one hand and an underclass stuck in poverty like America. I also think Canadians, like the British, are quite generous as a nation. e.g. if England or Canada had a disaster like the hurricane in New Orleans they would tend to help each other rather than rape, pillage and every man for himself like they did in New Orleans. It's all in the breeding old chap !

I'm a Canadian, born and raised, and everyone I know who's also Canadian loves it here. There is no other country I'd rather live in.

We have higher taxes because we have socialized health care, and I'm completely fine with that. Having suffered with several ovarian cysts and a fractured shoulder, I've been in the hospital and needed ultrasounds, CT Scans, X-rays, morphine. None of it cost me a penny. I walked into the ER, they put me right through and had my X-rays done. It took me all of 15-20 minutes. If I need to pay higher taxes to ensure everyone else's healthcare needs are being attended to, then I will without complaint. We all look after each other, no one should go bankrupt or be denied help because they're sick and have no money.

I like our gun laws. I don't believe that gun possession and ownership is a right, I believe it's a privilege and luckily so does our government. Do we still have shootings occasionally or gun related crimes? Of course. Is that number significantly lower than countries without laws that regulate guns strictly? You bet your ass. I've heard of more people getting knives pulled on them then guns and put it this way; you can outrun a knife. A bullet? not so much.

Abortion is legal here and I believe it should be; you can purchase Plan B at any drug store over the counter around here, something I've yet to see in the US. My birth control is covered by Blue Cross, I pay about 5 dollars for 3 months worth of oral contraceptive. I hear of people like Mitt Romney who wanted abortion banned and birth control made illegal and I hope he could see both my middle fingers wishing him a farewell when he lost the election and got the fuck out of Dodge.

Gay marriage is legal because we believe in equality.
We're not perfect by any means. Our laws are too strict in some aspects (marijuana possession for example) and too lax in others (Such as how pedophiles get off the hook easily in court and most are free to walk amongst the general populace) Our animal welfare laws needs improvement, our court system isn't the best by any means, but I am very very happy with my country.

I used to think really highly of Canada, but sadly, like the UK and Australia, they've gone pretty far down the rabbit hole of political correctness and multiculturalism recently. Not that we don't have that here in the US too, but it seems to be worse in the other English speaking countries.

it's kinda like the U.S. meets Europe. The Simpsons had a great episode set in Vancouver where they went to the Olympics. In the crowd at one of the games there were three guys, one American, one French, and one Canadian. When the opposing team scored in the game, everyone cheered. The American shouted "Holy Shit!" The Frenchman shouted "Sacré Bleu!" The Canadian shouted "Sacred Blue!"

Get your facts straight. The battle of Vimy Ridge was in WWI.
    But on-topic:
Canada is a really great place to live, and it's not like you have to live
in Toronto or Vancouver. There are some pretty awesome cities around like Mississauga or Vaughan. Dunno about other provinces though. Also, that bible thing is bs.

From what I've heard it sounds like a good place to live in. But still, let's not forget about their evil mining multinationals that pay off corrupt third world governments (such as mine) so that they can steal all of their minerals without leaving anything to the local community, pretty much similar to the way it used to work when we were a colony, and pollute without any control.

Almost everything I know about Canada I learnt from 'Due South' (very quirky cop show) and the first two series of 'Ice Road Truckers' (fly-on-the-wall documentary series about, well, ice road truckers). The former plays up the stereotypes for comic effect; the latter shows you that the former is really another documentary.

Love the accent and the quiet manner of most of the people. Don't get the impression the wilderness is cared for as well as it could be, but which country gets THAT right?

Canada is a lovely place to live, in my opinion. If you're bored, you can come live in Montreal. Aside from the cultural and musical events/expositions/etc occurring, the politics here are just hilarious. The politicans act as though they're ignorant (and are oh so chalk full of racist statements), bratty 5 year olds most of the time. You can also engage in our yearly game of "spot the pothole" in the springtime (supported by our corrupt system of outsourced construction companies). If you don't stare at the road for about 2 months of the year, you're liable to find yourself in a 2 foot deep "pothole" that spans a third of the road width. It's exciting!
