To really miss video rental stores?

I really miss renting big box VHS movies from mom and pop stores back in the 80’s. Everything about it was so magical when I was young. I fondly remember looking at all the cool artwork on the covers with such anticipation and wonder. Then blockbuster came along and sucked all the charm out of it and the rest is history. Streaming is convenient but nowhere near as much fun.

I remember once over twenty years ago me, and two friends of mine went into the adult video section in the back of the video rental store, and scared away the creepy losers who were browsing the shelves. Honestly, there will NEVER be a time when I look back upon that experience, and feel anything, but joy! It was hilarious! We were laughing really loud, and talking about what kinda losers rent that garbage. We probably made them feel ashamed, and uncomfortable, but you know what? I don't feel the least bit of remorse. 😁

They thought you were lesbian perverts. They were comfortable with your perversions, but not with you being lesbians. Lesbians hostility is ignited by male attraction.

I don't know about that, because it was me, my best female friend and my male friend. The three of us just happened to enjoy trolling the consumers of dirty movies. I have no regrets!

I remember when I used to go to Blockbuster near my cousins house, I would rent out some movies. It was sad for it to be demolished at least that memory had cherished me since childhood.

Yes! The cover art was one of my favorite things too. They really had to get your attention and pique your curiosity, unlike today where you basically already know what any given movie is about and as a result, they don't put much effort into it most of the time.

My favorite movie art was Goonies, April Fools Day, Vacation, European Vacation, Jaws, Ghoulies, and probably more... I can't remember right now. Rocky Horror Picture Show! My mom wouldn't let me ever rent that though, she said it wasn't what I thought it would be. I finally got around to watching it when I was like 25, it was definitely not what I was expecting.

I used to buy my Garbage Pail Kids at the video store. 25 cents a pack!

Did you ever embarrass your mom by belting out any of the risqué song lyrics at an inopportune time?

I probably would've liked the movie a lot more had I seen it at a younger age.

We were allowed to take tapes to school for the whole class to listen to. Everyone loved the Time Warp, soooo...

Teacher ran to turn it off at Sweet Transvestite hahaha.

I really miss record stores but most have closed down except in the really large cities. The last DVD/VHS rental in my city closed down last year.

  • I do have some fun memories at video stores, going around guessing what movies were about. I remember laughing at the cover for Spanglish. The coolest part imo was the snacks and candy though. Oh man and I played a few pokemon games too. I would play around with the save file before making a new one

They just closed down the last video rental place in my town. Its the only one I've seen in years. It was video rental/tanning business.

My parents would never take me to blockbuster, they deprived me of that iconic experience. Someone play a violin for me.

The video store, in my mind, is a sacred memory. It's what I picture when I go to my "happy place" during deep breathing exercises. There was something magical about browsing the aisles on Friday night, picking up the video boxes, flipping them over, reading the back covers...the sense of TOUCH is something you will never replicate on a streaming site.

It's the focal point in my subconsciousness where everything was 'right.' It saddened the hell out of me to read Family Video, the last chain in the U.S., was permanently closing. It means in all likelihood I'll never walk into a video store again.

I kinda miss going to Gamestop. To bad they closed down all their stores in my country.

I remember feeling shocked, repulsed and excited the first time I saw the private pictures and video tapes of the parents I was babysitting for. I felt like I was letting the parents down by looking through it but, like a car wreak, I couldn't stop myself from going through it. I was a virgin and VERY curious but grossed out. This night answered a lot of questions for me.

I started snooping at all the places I babysat for. After a while I became convinced EVERY couple made their own porno tapes. It was just a subject nobody talked about. So when guys started to want to take pictures and then videos of me I let them.

This memory isn't from the 80's but I remember going to the Pokemon Snap kiosks at Blockbuster when I was a kid. I'd bring in my Pokemon Snap game cartridge, get a card from the Blockbuster employer, insert those into the kiosk, and pick which pictures I wanted to print into stickers. I miss Blockbuster. When the one near my house left, the empty building was turned into an Auto Zone.

I remember renting DVD movies. To be fair, streaming is a lot better.

I said yes if it’s your preference, but not me. Sometimes they were out of a popular movie, then you had to pay a late fee if it was overdue. And toward the end they started charging a rewinding charge if you forget to do it. Then what about having to go out in the rain or cold to bring it back. Online rental is way better.
