Using Windows 95, do you do it?
I've read that there are loads of computers around the world still running Windows 95 and other ancient operating systems. Lots of these are in big organisations (like the US military) and they run custom-made software performing mission-specific tasks. The software does what it needs to do adequately, and anyone with any experience of IT knows that trying to fix something that ain't broke will cost a lot more than the original budget, take a lot longer to complete than initially thought and you'll probably end up with something not all that much better than what you started out with.
The biggest problem with older, no longer supported versions of Windows is security. Going online with a machine running an operating system that is not regularly patched is asking for trouble, and Windows 95 has loads of known vulnerabilities. The organisations which still use ancient operating systems are able to do so safely because they're either standalone machines or run only on a local network isolated from the internet, and they're locked-down to prevent unauthorised users from messing around with the installed software, either deliberately or accidentally.
If Windows 95 allows you to do what you need to do, then you being all retro is perfectly fine, but it would be stupid to connect the machine to the internet. Even if you're running security software, I suspect this would only give you an illusion of safety, since I doubt if any of the firms which sell security packages are still actively tracking new exploits and vulnerabilities in Windows 95.
I use DOS. Who has time for GUIs and silly little hand held pointing devices?
It is no problem if you use it, but you could try a more modern pc.
It would change your life once you learn how to use it xD
I recommend you Windows 7 a least
Not Windows 95 but I still stick to 97. It's so simple and easy to carry out whatever tasks. So, like people said if you're insecure, "you do you."
My work place still needs to use Windows 98 for many legacy applications and vital data that have been recorded and arent compatible with modern OS. I used Windows 98 on my personal computer long ago, 1999-2004, then upgraded to later versions. I still need to use Win 98 at my work place from time to time. Btw I still sue Windows 7 (using since 2011), 8 was junk and 10 has a flaw of deleting your files without your permission, be they corrupted or whatever, Microsoft has no right to delete stuffs from user owned devices without user permission.
Now and then when I'm in the mood I'll pull out my old vintage hardware and install 95 or 98, then sit there for a few hours playing some retro games.
Man and I tried to install Microsoft office 2013 and my computer got offended
I gotta ask... can you even use Win95 properly?
Obviously you're not gonna run photoshop and any games on it, but what about general use.
Like watching videos, opening internet sites... Does that even work?
And no, I don't think it's normal. It's just too outdated of an OS. Hell, even Win 7 is considered old, even tho I love it and still use it.
I don't like the Win 10 layout. It's like it was designed only for tablets and smartphones. I like the old Win 7 and XP layout.
"Obviously you're not gonna run photoshop and any games on it, but what about general use."
You are WRONG. Yo can play Solitare on windows 95. Yeah, look it up.
Yes it would work with software from that era. You would need drivers for newer hardware and the nic card, or if you knew how you could run an emulation for it but yes it works.
One issue with web browsing, is that ie from then doesn't support common extensions in use today, so sites won't render properly. In other words sites will look like hell. Of course, you can always download a newer browser, but I dont think that's what you are asking.
I have never used 95. 98 is the earliest version and that was back when it and XP were the big things.
I tried downgrading to Windows2000 back in 2010-2011. Didn't work. Even installing Windows2000 to another partition didn't work.
