Videogames are suddenly unbearable

Hi, first question here, i`ve been playing games for more than 20 years now... sometimes ive been a hardcore player (more than 40 hours a week) and sometimes a casual (much less than that) but i`ve3 always enjoyed video games A LOT. Well, few weeks ago i woke up on a regular sunday and turned on my newly built gaming pc...and to my surprise i couldnt enjoy a single game i tried... since then EVERY game i tried seemed really boring and stale.... i cant find the motivation to play anymore... is it normal to be a hardcore player (playing bf3, guild wars2, dota2, borderlands 2) and suddenly find every game out there boring and just want to do something else???? Btw im 25 years old

    Try focusing on another hobby.

I tend to drift from one obsession to another. For a while I might do nothing but read and write in my spare time, then one day I'd wake up, and do nothing but listen to and play music.

Anything can get stale if you over expose yourself.

In my opinion, Skyrim wasn't that good. I liked Oblivion WAAYYY more than Skyrim! The quests were amazing in that game!

  • Play some Sonic the Hedgehog. Always helps me when I think most games today are crappy.

Games are truly dreadful these days. Zero imagination, just higher resolutions. They've gone the way of Hollywood films. I guess when you produce something in a factory, you sacrifice uniqueness. For some products that's desirable. Not entertainment, though.

Some games have had lots innovation, such as dota, path of exile and natural selection. Noticeably these are mostly non professional games.

All professional studios nowadays always play it safe because they're mostly concerned about money. Thus the main genres have seen very little progression in the past 5 to 10 years.

Gone are the days when mainstream, popular games were made by three dudes in a basement who only cared about making a fun game. However this sort of set up still exists, mostly in free to play, unprofessional PC based developers.

Exactly right; the bigger the game or franchise, the safer people play it. Because it's a big game, it gets big advertising revenues and so everyone goes out and buys it. Because they do, it's seen as a success and the cycle continues.

You're right that there's good stuff out there but it's not always easy to find. I wish the best games made the most money and pushed the industry to take risks.

That's actually so true! I brought out my old N64 the other day and MAN were those games a million times more imaginative. Way more detail when it comes to fun, but alot less in graphics lol. Whatever happened to open world games where you can go wherever you want without following a set map?

Yeah, everything is a formula these days. I used to write games and I did it on my own, purely based on what I liked and thought should be included. They were a bit mad but then, I was a bit mad myself. Also, why is there no humour in games any more?

And, like you say open-world games. More than that, though, open-achievement. Look at the original Monkey Island game. It's funny, imaginative and it's not really possible to "lose" or die. Something like CoD looks very dull and po-faced by comparison. Also a bit tragic in that the only achievements comes from murdering representations of other players.

Exactly! I mean, there's nothing wrong with those games, but there's more than one genre out there and the industries should stop sticking to the same crap. I played banjo kazooie the other day. I felt like such a kid! But it's such a fun game. The old legend of zelda games never actually get old :P
I didn't know you wrote games? Is that as a hobby or a career?

Same here. I knocked over my tv all drunk and have since procrastinated to pick it back up. And that was 3 weeks ago.

I haven't played a video game in ages. Like the mid 90's. I still have that old sega with sonic and mortal combat.

I'm the same way. I find myself wanting to play the games I originated with back in the 90s. I think it's the overdose of newer games that's putting me off. Time to go to the store and pick up an SNES, Atari, PlayStation, and Sega Genesis.

I'm a 43 old male and I go through these phases also. Don't worry, you'll eventually get back into it.

I've started to feel the same way this year. Every game is just boring as hell. I can't get in to any of them. I hardly turn on my xbox unless its for Netflix.

I haven't played games much at all for the last few weeks. I play maybe a match of BF3 a couple of times a week right now.

I'm sure when a new big title you've been waiting for releases, you'll be right back into gaming. As will I. :P

    Have you tried going retro?

Emulation is one of my favorite hobbies. Being able to play old-school videogames on my laptop with a PS3 controller is pretty bad-ass in my opinion :)

I know. But some (not all) people eventually start getting bored of games as they get older.

Do something a bit more useful with your time. Gaming is pretty much just another useless habit - like too much TV - only OK for a bit of entertainment.
