Was youtube really better in the past, or is it just nostalgia?
Everyone is always saying how Youtube was better in 2007. Are they right, or do they just look at it with rose-tinted glasses?

Part of the nostalgia comes from the gaming side of YouTube. Namely from the gaming content creators who carried YouTube for a significant period of time. Many of them have quit YouTube outright, quit making gaming content, or no longer solely rely on gaming to run their channels.
Channels such as Markiplier and Jacksepticeye have improved. Massively. Some other channels have declined in quality.
Something worth mentioning is that the 2016-2018 era of YouTube was easily the worst of the platform's history. It forced channels to either rely on sponsorships/Patreon or become more family friendly. Often users would be demonetized for simply saying the word "Die". It wasn't Google's fault necessarily, it was advertisers panicking after the whole Pepsi ad situation.
Personally I find the incredibly early days of YouTube to be awful. 2012-2015 and 2019-2021 are good eras of YouTube content wise.
In late 2016, early 2017, Pepsi had purchased ad space on YouTube for an advertisement that immediately drew backlash. In said ad, Kendall Jenner used Pepsi to stop a dispute between the Police and Civil Rights Activists; by giving the Pepsi to the police.
The backlash from this ad was so large that Pepsi removed all ads from YouTube, claiming that the ads were being played on videos they found unsuitable to their brand. Other brands quickly followed Pepsi, telling YouTube that they would only come back to the platform if the content became more family friendly.
During 2016 and 2017 (As well as much of 2018.) the advertisements were so limited that it forced even the largest of content creators to seek other ways to make money. YouTube has only recently begun allowing swearing in videos again.
I liked the fact that there weren't ads on every video (or ads at all), and it wasn't littered with as much BuzzFeed-esque type content. However, there is far more content in general now, including a lot of really helpful how-to videos.
Unrelated, but I think Google's search engine was much better back then, though. It actually gave you what you were searching for and not a million results that are only slightly related to what you searched, most of the first 5 or so pages being shitty blogs and clickbait sites.
Even before 2010 it was better. It seemed decentralized and was a part of the wild wild web. Google was better too. Now they will suppress things they dont want you to see. Especially any conspiracy stuff.
they don't care about dumb conspiracy theories as much as actual facts that people might take seriously
Which is problematic when all the internet companies tend to be lookouts for the left and they have complete control of all information you cant get aside from Fox news which is also establishment media. Its state run media at this point. It started once Trump won in 2016 because they realized Trump couldnt have gotten elected without the internet.
Even the NewYorkPost and Trumps media secretary were suspended on twitter for posting a true story about Bidens son being on the board of a Ukraine gas company. No one denies its validity.
360p Resolution, Unregistered hypercam, Dreamscape song on every video, Notepad tutorials, voting with stars, no advertisements. Yeah, it was clearly superior then.
Me too! I just miss the overall aesthetic that Youtube used to have back then. Today's youtube, and websites in general, feel a bit " sterile " due to the fact that they're all striving for minimalism. Back in 2006-2007, things in general, design-wise, seemed to strive more for maximalism. Look at any logotype from that era compared to now.
It was certainly more homely and amusing. I don't necessarily think it was better. I thought it was cool at the time, but it was new and fresh. Everything always seems that way when it's new.
The youtubers in the gaming community were definietely better before. Now they're all trying wayy too hard to appeal to the current teenagers clinging hard to stupid memes and acting like quirky teenagers or trying to be edgy when they're close to or even over 30 at this point. It's just cringy because they try so hard to be relatable that it feels clowny and unnatural. There's still some good ones but they're not among the biggest names, hence they're not desperate to stay relevant.
it was much better. You could comment on videos, there weren't ads every 5 seconds, or ridiculous requirements, or people talking about their dumb sponsors that nobody gives a crap about. And you could save cartoon videos to playlists. Literally youtube is so shit now, they even turned off comments on videos of me dancing WITHOUT MY PERMISSION, probably cause they thought I look like a MiNoR, but the thing is, I was fucking 20 IN THE VIDEOS!!! >:(
Nothing like the Good ol Yogscast minecraft alpha gameplay to get me invested in the young upstart game of minecraft.
