This morning I washed a load of clothes and forgot to put in soap powder, yet the clothes came out clean and smelling good when dry.

As long as your clothes get clean I would not be concerned about it. If you really can not tell any difference in your clothes I would not see any problem with only using soap every other time you wash them.
If water alone was a sufficient cleaner, then why is the soap industry so profitable?
When sailing across oceans before water makers, we used to wash our clothes in sea water. Tide was the only detergent that would work, so I wonder what it's got that the others don't?
'why is the soap industry so profitable?'
Perhaps because most the populace is brainwashed by companies with a vested interest to use as much of their cleaning products as possible?
Like I said, I forgot to put the soap in and the clothes weren't that dirty anyway, but they still came out looking and smelling fresh and clean.
'I wonder what it's got that the others don't?'
"Tide, the first heavy-duty synthetic detergent, was not just a new product, but a new kind of product."

Your clothes must not have been very dirty in the first place and the scent is from your dryer sheets.
Fuck no. I've never forgot to put soap in but I deliberately left it out once.
