Weird making so much money

I didnt go to college and I work a job that doesnt require much education or anything really. I make quite a lot of money. I have friends and I know other people who went to college and got tens of thousands in debt and I often make quite a bit more than them. I almost feel guilty about it and always try to steer the conversation away from money. They may mention their income and ask me about how much my trade pays and I tell them I dont like to talk about it. Because its kind of crazy I'm making so much more than them and they have fancy degrees and important jobs. I have worked very hard in my life doing hard labor but I really dont feel like I did anything to deserve such a good income with the job I do now.

    • I do this pretty well. I drive an old beat up pickup truck and live very humbly.

Absolutely! I always think it's wise to not discuss finances, because it's too easy to get people wanting to hit you up for money, even if you aren't wealthy (all it takes is having more than they do).

Invest. Use your lifestyle to bring joy to people - especially people who don't get paid enough to indulge in nice things very often.

You don't say what exactly you do, but you mention a trade, so I guess it's something skilled like plumbing, construction or a mechanic.

There's a lot of snobbery about having a degree (I say that as someone who has a BSc, BTW), and there's a persistent belief that having one is the only way one can have a successful career. But as you say, these days getting a degree results in being saddled with a huge amount of debt (particularly in the USA), the cost of college is continually going up, and there has to be a point where an objective cost-benefit analysis of a degree will reach the point where getting one makes little sense. What's more, the value of a degree in the employment market is being continually degraded as more and more people get one. Meanwhile, the disdained trades are short of workers, and those working in the trades are earning more and more because they're in short supply.

And, yeah, those people may believe they're very important and they may have an impressive title on the chart of their corporation's hierarchy. But if the toilets down the hall from their fancy office overflow one day, their degree and job title isn't going to stop them from being ankle-deep in shit until some lowly plumber fixes the problem.

As far as I'm concerned, the only people who should be ashamed of how much they earn are those who spend their working lives getting paid ridiculous sums for providing little or nothing of real value - like CEOs of huge corporations, Wall Street predators, used car salesmen, televangelists and the owners of internet scamming outfits to name just a few.

You've obviously done something. You probably have a specialty and/or abilities that you don't have to go to college for. Nothing wrong with that. Good for you, just be grateful you're better off and keep at it.
