Were there any openly gay people at your school?

I just finished high school last year and I was one of quite a few openly gay guys at my school (I even met my boyfriend and had a relationship at school). But I have read that even just five or so years ago it was quite rare for people to be openly gay at school.

So I am wondering - were there any openly gay people at your school? If there weren't any - when did you go to school?

Yes - there were lots openly gay people. 43

I went to an all girls' school, and there were 120 in our year. I know there were a few 'bi' girls. I honestly wouldn't have known if some of the girls were gay, because I tried to avoid most of my grade because they were just generally horrible people. People may have thought that I was, because I showed very little outward interest in boys at school, because I was very shy and self concious.

  • I grew up in a small town full of red-necks and hill-billies. There were definitely homosexuals and lesbians, but they waited until they finished high-school and moved away before they came out.

There is a Gay Straight Alliance club at my school so if anyone is gay, straight, lesbian, etc. they can find acceptance there. So plenty of people express their sexuality openly at my school. It's pretty awesome having a club that promotes acceptance on campus.

So basically I went to a Catholic high school so there were ZERO clubs or talks about homosexuality and homosexuals from teachers and other staff. It was so messed up. While all these public schools would have these amazing Gay-Straight Alliances, our school was the last one to ever have a club like that, even though a new law said every school needed to have one, apparently..

Anyways, I'm gay and I was one of maybe 2 or 3 other kids in my school who were openly gay. I was the only "feminine" gay guy in my school, though. The other ones were literally SO masculine, most people didn't even know they were gay until someone would randomly mention it... It's ridiculous because obviously, there were SO many more kids at my school who were gay but decided to keep it secret.

Thing is, the students at my school were super cool with gay people- yet, there were still so many openly gay students. Like I was never bullied.

I just wish everyone could be comfortable with being open about their sexual orientation and that everyone could respect people for that. But yeah, it'll take a miracle for such a thing.

  • I went to an Australian highschool in the late 90's to early 00's, it was a whole different world back then.

That remake of "21 jump street" springs to mind. If you've seen it they show how a decade ago it was cool to be insensitive, tough, and not try hard at anything. Now it's almost the total opposite. Kids are far more understanding and open minded these days.

If you were openly gay back then you'd very likely be beaten to a pulp. It's still imprinted in my mind to a degree. I see most teens now and think "what a bunch of wimps, they're all so soft".

It's like a natural response to growing up in the "fuck you" environment of that time period.

There were a very small number of openly gay guys abd openly gay girls and a couple of well known trannies who were kind of considered freaks. No idea why, they were pretty cool.

There were a lot of bi girls who had a lot of fun with eachother. We had fun.

Yes, 2 of my closest guy friends, one spent 6 years pretending that he liked girls, whilst being extremely camp only in the last year he came out, but when he did people kind of already knew lol. The other waited till he left and is now a male go go dancer at a gay club.

There was only one that was openly gay in my class (250), although that may have to do with the fact that it was a religious school so many people weren't exactly...accepting.

In my year of about 300 kids: there's one or two I can think of straight away. One guy who left a few months after coming out (completely unrelated to his coming out - he got good enough grades to move to a really good school), and one girl who is openly lesbian. A handful more are/were openly bisexual, probably 2 or 3 guys and 4 to 6 girls. I think quite a few people are probably out of the closet but only within their group of close friends and not to the whole school. There's no atmosphere of homophobia toward any of the girls and there was no homophobia toward the gay boy, but there is some toward a few of the bisexual lads.

Plenty~~! Me included... at least in college. When I came out. I was friends with all the Lesbians in 2010 to 2012... because they were nicer than the straights and more accepting of me, a transfer student from 500 miles away.

Tons and tons of them. At first I didn't care, but eventually they started hitting on me and I started to not like gay people. Now I like gay people again because they're not hitting on me.

Back in high school, in the terrible terrible little town I lived in there was 1 openly gay kid.

He was chained by his feet to the back if a truck and drug to death down gravel roads... Safe to say I live far away from there now, horrible place.

There were a couple of openly gay guys at my school, a few lesbians and bisexual girls (I was actually pretty good friends with one of them). I just never really thought about it; their sexual orientation never changed my perception of them.

Yup, there was one at my middle school and I even hung over his house. He had a sexy sister. I was being nice and didn't deny friendship but one time I answered the phone and it went just like this:

    "Hello?"
    "Wannagooutwithme?"
    "What?"
    "Nothing."

Yeaaaah, that certainly helps me trust people. He didn't try anything after that and ironically years later after moving away, he came back and came to my then job with friends and acted completely normal, or as normal as a trouble maker could be with friends. Those two friends were guys too. I really don't discriminate with anyone though, that was just one experience.

No, I'm quite sure there were none among the crowd I mixed with and I didn't get involved with every student in the school, so I don't know if there were any among the students I didn't personally know.

I did witness two drunk girls making out at a party once, but booze makes people do stupid things, so I wouldn't know if they were actually gay or just taking a dare while drunk.
