Were you ever told that you had a learning disability in school?

I always hated when people made other people feel like they were incompetent/incapable or inept or something like that, just because of a learning disability.
When I was in school, I was allotted extra time on my exams, and a quiet location, because sometimes I felt like I needed to read the question twice in order to process it fully, and I was easily distracted if the room was loud. I also needed to use different strategies in studying. Sometimes the approach that other people used wasn't the best approach for me to use. But even though I am completely finished with school, and I'm currently in college, It still haunts me today how some people exclude other people for reasons such as a learning disability. I feel like sometimes people are underestimated, and treated as though they have some form of retardation. Although, I did have quite a few friends in school, I still felt like sometimes the more "popular" kids made me feel like I was stupid for taking more time on my test then they would.
And just like many other students, I had subjects that I excelled in, while others I struggled.

Yes, and sometimes I felt like I was singled out. 47

  • As a young kindling growing up in the foothills of Bavaria the midwife would give me pills in the hopes that it would calm me down.

    Her hopes were in vain.

Yeah I heard I was on Ritalin when I was younger because of my hyperactive behaviour. I don't think I was officially diagnosed w/ ADHD until I was at least 17 years old.
Anyways I'm on Adderall XR 40 mg now and it does make you feel at times "on edge". It's supposed to help me maintain attention more but I would suggest adding exercise definetly as an added benefit.

I don't have a real disability and I don't know if this counts, but I have below average hearing and I get distracted easily. I get singled out sometimes by the really nasty teachers, but the teachers I've talked to before only ask me a question when I raise my hand or they KNOW I am paying attention.

My sis keeps telling me I have the attention span of a goldfish, which I think is kind of true. In class, I could get distracted by someone dropping their pencil on the floor and picking it up. I'd stare at the pencil until something else caught my attention. I find it hard to pay any attention to the lesson. The bad teachers would always ask me a question out of the blue. Since it's out of the blue, I would only hear the second half of the question and cut out some words due to my hearing.

If a teacher were to ask me, let's say, "What are the first stages of digestion?(just an example)", I would start paying attention at "First stages of digestion" and probably only hear "First Digestion" or something like that. I would answer with "Can you repeat that?" and I would hear "What are first of digestion?"

I would usually get really nervous and end up saying a ridiculous answer like "Four".

ADHD is a myth, just a way for big pharma to make loads of money by pushing pills down kids throats. To get other a supposed ADHD case you just need to be taught to handle yourself.

Yeah I had a learning problem during school years, that is why I decided at 13 to drop out of my studies and go to work for Chryslers Windsor in the paint department, glad I did.

I've had a learning disability ever since elementary. I've never felt down because of it, because I knew I wasn't stupid or dumb I just needed extra time to do things. Whenever tests came to be done my brain would literally shut down because of the axiety I felt while doing them. You have to get a diagnoses otherwise you may never get the help you truly need.
    P.S: Thanks for the story!

How weird, my boss just told me a story today about he had an odd behavior as a child. When he took tests, every answer was several pages long- even when it only required a one word answer. Once he got to 6th grade the teachers started failing him because he would only answer one question with 5 pages of writing. He has learned to control that behavior with writing, but not his talking.
