Specifically, a very large utility trailer + other items I might only need to use once a year or so. I assume most of the US is within a few hours drive from some sort of desert/grasslands/plains where I could just hide things with a tarp unnoticed.

Nothing is actually stopping you from dumping in the desert. But that also means that nothing is stopping someone else from taking the things you leave there as being "abandoned". Or taking your things to the actual dump and pitching or recycling them.
My land is not your land. Do you mind if I set up a box full of my stuff in your living room. I'll paint the box the color of your walls, you'll hardly notice it!
Most of all land is owned by someone in the USA. And land owners in the USA do not like trespassers. Even if it looks like wasteland thats not developable theres someone who owns it and will get pissed if adults are using it.
If possible, you should make it an underground space. Otherwise if the owner of that land finds it, then they'd just get rid of it.
Agreed with everyone else here saying that the land is owned by somebody and if they find it (or if somebody else comes across it), they could take it for themselves or get rid of it.
This is what storage units are for, though they are not free (and prices were going up last I had one). You could also build a storage shed in your backyard or get one of the pre-made ones, though they're only recommended for things that can stand being in a non-climate controlled space.
If you can, try not to have too much stuff for your living space. I have so much crap right now, including stuff that is still in boxes from when I moved in 2+ years ago, and I'm not looking forward to going through it all. I used to like having an abundance of stuff, but now it is just frustrating because I have little room left in my storage areas in my house.
The same thing that's preventing anyone else from stealing your stuff that you placed out in the wilderness
Here's the thing about empty land: someone always owns it. If they find your stuff on their property they'll either dispose of it or take it for themselves. If you want more space, you're better off buying land yourself.
Other people taking your shit. Unless you place some sort of a lock on it... It's gonna get taken if you just leave it out there. It's not even on your property... So you can't really say it belongs to you. Finders keepers.
Other than the possibility of wildlife officers/game wardens stumbling upon your stash? Nothing.
