What age do kids realize "hey! i hate having sticky fingers!"

So, the other day i'm sitting there bored. I spilled soda or something and got my hands all sticky. It bothered me to the maximum.

I remembered back to being a kid and how I used to get dirty ALL the fucking time.

I remembered how I would go around all day with sticky shit on my hands and my shirt all dirty from the afternoon's lunch.

Then I thought "when the hell did this become annoying?" I used to not care and now I can't stand it.

      3 seconds later

      "EWWWW!"

      Lesson learned :)

According to what my parents have told me, I have always been very keen on keeping myself clean, even as a kid. Like washing my hands often etc.

When I was a kid, I hated being sticky, which is basically like being a spider with arachnophobia.

I hate the feeling you get when mud dries on your hands.

Or when you've been cleaning with bleach and it sucks the moisture from your skin.

When I was younger me and the kids in my neighbourhood would go to the junkyard and they'd bring their dogs and I'd let them watch their dogs shit on me for $5

I don't know, but I was pretty young. I remember doing arts & crafts and I got glue on my hands. It drove me up the way and I felt horrible. From then on, I couldn't handle my hands getting glue on them. I'm this with other substances as well.

      opposite for me.

I used to coat my hands in Elmer's glue and wait for it to dry so i could peel it off like a layer of skin. lol

I've always been one to hate being dirty, even when I was little.. didn't care so much about outdoors dirty, but I HATED being food dirty when I was little. I'd so so much as to change my shirt if there was something on it..

But, living with my grandparents for a few years, I've watched my cousins growing up, and I found that the girls notice when they're about 4-5 and the boys notice when they're 8-10... So I guess it just depends.

It varies depending on the person. I was 5 years old when I realized sticky stuff is gross. I washed my hands every chance I got.

HaHa I have no idea when I started having sticky hands, but this post opened up a ton of curiosity for me. I must find out!

I've always hated the feeling of sticky hands and I can't remember a time when I didn't care.

It's gross. When I'm watching my boyfriend's niece and nephew I always make sure they wash their hands after basically everything they do before they start playing with my son. Same with my own niece and nephew for that matter. And I wash my sons hands as often as I can and he's only thirteen months old.

What is this mysterious sticky shit?? What the hell are they touching exactly?? Why can't they feel when their hands are dirty and proceed to wash them themselves?? I don't understand.

I don't even like the feeling of lotion on the palms of my hands, my mom thinks I'm weird for washing my hands after I apply lotion to the rest of my body.

Eww! I'm still baffled as to what is making their hands that way. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Melted ice cream? Marshmallow? Okay..there's a few ideas..but I'm sure they all don't eat them every single day. And if they do, they need to learn how to wash their hands afterwards!!!

That's not something I've ever thought about, to be honest... I'll have to ask my mum about that.

    Uh... well...
I don't believe in the concept of Asperger's Syndrome but I have been diagnosed with it. I think it was about 2-3 where I realized that I hate having my hands dirty, period. I remember my Mom reporting to me that it was around that age. My hands had to be clean. No dirt, no sticky shit, I would hold them up and ask to wash my hands when they got sticky.

I still hate having my hands dirty or even dry. My hands are very sensitive and I rely quite a bit on touch with my hands as a form of sensory input. I don't fucking know why. I've joked before that if one were to cut off my hands, I'd probably lose half the nerves in my body. The most infuriating thing would be that I wouldn't be able to feel anything...

What do you mean you don't believe in the concept of Asperger's Syndrome? I'm not judging, I just don't know what you mean. I'm diagnosed as well, but I'm somewhat proud of it.

I believe that Aspergers is more of a common cluster of symptoms rather than a mental... "challenge" in and of itself. I wish Psychiatrists would not be so quick to label someone as having a mental disorder, because often people allow themselves to become trapped within the confines of what it means to have a mental disorder.

It's fine. I have nothing against those that attach validity to the diagnosis but I don't believe I could even if I wanted to.

Depends on the kid. And sometimes it can vary through the course of the day. I look after a 3yr old who will not wear anything slightly dirty and always wants her hands wiped. I've looked after 12 year olds who couldn't have cared less. Gemerally, some time between 2 and 6, I guess. But if they're really caught up in an activity, they'll stop noticing.
