You can commit to a religion while still learning about others...they're not mutually exclusive.

True, but I personally choose not to commit to any.

I've been Roman Catholic all my life, and have zero intention of ever changing, but I do like to read about Buddhism, Wicca and certain New Age things. I think it's normal to study about various religions and philosophies.

This is really the only sensible thing to think, but it's so depressing and lonely which is why I think people go for religion.

How is it depressing and lonely? Personally, I find it fascinating that almost every religious figure has something in common, yet details vary by culture. It's almost like the world has different pieces to a puzzle we've long forgotten about.

Awh, don't be depressed, because there are people out there trying to figure it out; hopefully they find the answer someday.

They won't figure out eternity, how the universe was created or what sentience is.

None of those things except maybe the latter, are logically possible.

We live in a giant enigma.

I believe that any of those things are possible, but I also believe strongly that it doesn't matter at all and it's not worth thinking about.

If there really is some sort of higher power that created the universe then it doesn't give a fuck what anyone does because it's of a completely different nature to us in a fundamental way. It probably barely registers humans as living creatures. It's just there. Why would it give a fuck about us or anything that we do?

Without offending anyone I don't believe in nothing because I kinda think people use their "God" as an excuse, for something, or a "escape goat", also I don't believe in anything because I want to die and disappear without having a "deal" with demons and angels or reborn

  • nikkiclaire

I believe in some kind of God because it seems built into me and gives me strenght, but I ultimately don't know what that is. I also believe life is ultimately pointless and nonsensical.

Anything could be true, but the universe is so incredibly vast we will never know. What a horrible trick to play on a supposed sentient being.

We sit here among billions on a grain of sand, among billions of grains of sand, and ponder our place. How cruel and scary is that?

It's just as likely to me that we are in a matrix.

But sister Nikk, my kindred spirit in common sense, everything we do has a darwinistic tinge to it, from mate selection, to economic betterment, to caring for grandchildren. Really, all of this is just propagation of life. Those good at it have kids that get better at it.

So, what if we up our game and send microbes to live on the planets, and then to the exoplanets. Holy fuck, someday the Milky Way will be the envy of our galactic cluster.
I really value your reply to this. You may not be as good at math as Isaac Newton, but you seem to think outside the box like that Einstein guy used to do.

All of those things could also just be for pleasure. Maybe we are all just hedonistic, not darwinistic, or maybe we are both.

I stand by the answers being unknowable.

        • McBean

As a confirmed Agnostic, your position resonates with my inner self. And, I think that hedonism is a very strong argument. Marquis de Sade loved to drink, fuck, and express his inner perversions. The thing is that over time, hedonists have less offspring than darwinists, who engage in hedonism to a lesser degree.

But, you make a good point. If engineering life for Mars, jupiters moons, cloud tops of Venus, etc, produced a survival advantage, people would get turned on by the idea (you know get wet, get hard, get subliminated and shit). People would say, my bugs are sexier than your bugs. They would have test tube wars for weekend entertainment. Now that I think of it, "Test Tube Wars" would be a good magazine to publish.

Oh Nikki, you always say the most provocative things. I wish I had a cool sister like you. Btw, in what direction does the unknowability of it all lead you?

There is a difference between none and atheist. Atheism is specifically the belief that there are no gods, believing nothing is different. Atheists can still believe in higher powers, just not gods.

I was a roman catholic until I fully read the Bible. I considered myself an agnostic for a long time but now I will more likely describe myself as an atheist. Maybe there are other things, creatures etc in the universe but a god certainly not. Then it depends on what definition one gives to god.

im nonreligious I think we're here to make the most out of our lives and live happily based on what we want, who we think we are, and do what we think is right. Set up our own rules instead of following rules already written in the bible. I don't think I need some dude in the sky telling me how I should live life and to not stray from his "ideal image" bc face it, that image is just restricting and boring.. someone change my mind bc to me it seems like someone made up religion to cope with the idea of death and set some kind of order but we have government and morality for that

The Jefferson quote caught my eye.

I'd always bought into the prevailing mythology that the Founding Fathers of the USA were all upstanding Christians in the sense that the term is understood by modern conservative Christians today, so I was astonished to learn that they weren't like that at all.

Many were Deists or strongly influenced by Deism. That term encompassed a range of beliefs, but if a Deist were to respond to this poll, they would tick, "I believe in God without religion." A Deist believes that a divine being brought the universe into existence, and then walked away. They don't believe in revealed truth, in prophecy or miracles, and thus they can't be called Christian in any sense. The philosophy developed as a result of rational, intelligent people looking at all the obvious bullshit peddled by religions and deciding it didn't make sense, but not quite being able to give up the idea of God as a First Cause.

They may have gone to church regularly, but that was probably because church attendance was as much a social networking thing in colonial times as a matter of personal religious observance. Washington, for example, attended church but refused to take communion, and many felt that indicated he was a Deist. It's also noticeable how many influential men of the time didn't use the term "God", but referred to "Divine Providence" or similar.

When people talk about the USA being founded on Christianity, what they're really referring to are the Pilgrims and other religious fanatics who buggered off across the Atlantic Ocean because sensible people in The Old Country got fed up with their nonsense and made life difficult for them.

One answers what I know and can know. = agnostic. And the other is what I believe. = atheist.

I can’t know if god or the afterlife does exist. No one really can. But I believe that neither one exists. If god does exist then I doubt that he’s the god of any holy books in my opinion god is unnecessary for the universe.
