I'm not sure how other places are, but when I had her put down I wasn't allowed to be with her during it. She probably died scared, alone, not knowing what was going on and wondering where I went. I've probably got some explaining to do to her.

Is it weird that I've never had a pet put down?  My sister's rough collie was pretty senile and arthritic when she passed at fourteen and a half years old though, but I don't think my sister would have wanted to put her down unless she had a terminal disease.

I know you're kinda more atheistic and I'm a Roman Catholic, but I think you're the cat's pajamas, because you don't walk around with a chip on your shoulder throwing shade at people of faith which is a characteristic I really and truly admire. I think there are a lot of people who have had bad experiences with regard to religion and their family of origin, and I feel bad for them, but those folks never miss a chance to hate on religion, and it's beyond tiresome when they do that. I honestly never see you hating on anyone of faith or anyone in general which is super refreshing! I do hate a lot on the pedobear incest-mongers on here, but I don't count them as humans.
          :^)

I certainly hope that there would be animals in Heaven, because to me it wouldn't be Heaven without them. I do believe in Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, but the funny thing is that although I don't have an active, serious belief in reincarnation, I can certainly understand the appeal of it.

I don't want to debate this with anyone online, because it bores me, but regardless of whether or not people believe in a higher power it drives me nuts when they put humans on this pedestal and go on about how only humans have a consciousness or could have a soul. Cats and dogs have been probably the greatest and most consistent joy in my life, and for the life of me I don't think I could or would ever wanna understand non-animal people, it just doesn't appeal to me. When I was in college the first time in my twenties some of best animal companions I had who saw me through my darkest days were actually rodents, two sweet mice and a wonderful rat. I was initially kicked out of the dorms for my first mouse, after having been caught with a naked boyfriend in my closet, and a big bottle of rum on two separate ocassions. After my folks helped move me into my first apartment it was only a matter of time before I got my second mouse and a rat, then just a couple of months til I found my injured orange tabby kitten under a bush. I can't live without animal companions. I was my worst adult self during a six year period when I didn't have a housecat to guide me.

She was pretty old and had hip/joint issues. She'd soil everything and she wouldn't eat anymore. I think she was feeling pretty sad. She lived to be 17 which is pretty long. I'm not sure if it's weird or not to not put down an animal. I guess it's only bad if the animal is terminal and suffering. Collies are so cute! When I see one I just wanna pet it!

Aww thanks Rose. You're sweet. I actually used to be one of those people who would shit on others for believing in something. I also had a few sjw type beliefs, but too many crazies made me ditch their artificial sweetener way of thinking and realize that everyone is free to think what they want and it doesn't make them bad people for having a different belief. Also, yeah I agree people who fuck children aren't human. XD

I love that animals can help during bad times. I'm happy they got you through. Blackie was my constant friend during the years: from when I was a nine year old playing Pokemon Cards, to my angsty teenage years, to my early 20's just figuring out things. It was a fun ride. I kind of wish she was around to meet my boyfriend. I know she would've hated him since he's tall and she had serious jealousy issues, but still it would've been fun to hang out with both of them at the same time.

I believe after death I won't be around to experience it, but my body will decay back into the world it came from. It's kind of cool to think I'll become part of the world again and continue on in various systems. This alone brings me peace. Also makes eating a chicken sandwich surreal, but interesting.

I love when people point to the lack of empirical proof as absolute proof of a absence of anything beyond our senses. At one time early scientists and philosophers were trying to convince people that they were getting sick from these things called germs. But there was no empirical proof. So no one believed them. Then came bacteria cultures and microscopes. Oops.

Just try to keep an open mind when confronting the beliefs of others. Someday you might find you were wrong

And having the thought that probably there is no afterlife just makes me value life more and do things genuinely, and not just because I want to go to heaven or something like that.does that make sense?

That's simple, you have to truly accept Christ into your life. You should know when this happens. There are people who go to church every Sunday then go out and judge people or just act like complete jerks. They're going through the motions but are not true Christians. The Lord won't know these people when he chooses who goes with him and who doesn't. So, in a nutshell, you'll spend eternity in Heaven if Christ is truly in your heart and you know him or go to a horrendous place for all eternity where every minute of your eternity is torture, pain and hell.

Imam Ahmad (17803) narrated that al-Bara’ ibn ‘Aazib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Verily, when the believing slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him angels from heaven with white faces, as if their faces are the sun. They bring with them one of the shrouds of Paradise and some of the perfume of Paradise. They sit with him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death (peace be upon him) comes to him and sits by his head and says, ‘O pure soul, come out to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah.’ Then his soul comes flowing out like a drop of water flowing from a cup. Then he takes the soul, and no sooner does he seize it but they take it and place it in that shroud and perfume. Then out of it comes the most excellent fragrance of musk to be found on the face of the earth. Then they ascend with it and they do not pass by any group of angels but the angels ask, ‘Who is this pure soul?’ and they reply, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so’ – using the best names by which he was known on earth. Then they bring it to the lowest heaven, and ask for it to be opened, and it is opened for him. Those who are of high rank in each heaven accompany it until they approach the next heaven, and so it goes until it reaches the seventh heaven. Then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon (the highest heaven) and take him back to the earth, for I created them from it, and I shall return them to it, then I shall take them out from it again.’ Then his soul is returned to his body and two angels come and make him sit up”

Then the hadith mentions the questioning in the grave, then it mentions how the soul of the disbeliever is taken, then it says:

“Then they ascend with it and they do not pass by any group of angels but the angels ask, ‘Who is this evil soul?’ and they reply, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so’ – using the worst names by which he was known on earth. Then they bring it to the lowest heaven, and ask for it to be opened, and it is not opened for him.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited (interpretation of the meaning): “… For them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle” [al-A’raaf 7:40]. Then he said, “Then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘Record the book of My slave in Sijjeen (the lowest Hell) in the lowest earth. Then his soul is cast down.” Then he recited (interpretation of the meaning): “… and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place.” [al-Hajj 22:31]. He said, “Then his soul is returned to his body and two angels come and make him sit up” Then it mentions the questioning in the grave.

Allah says in the Quran, “Did you think that We created you without any purpose, and that you would not be brought back to Us? High and far removed is Allah, the True King, from what they attribute to Him. None has the right to be worshiped except Him.” [Soorah al-Mu’minoon (23):115-116]

“Does man think he will be left aimlessly, not being given orders and prohibitions and commanded to worship Allah? Was the denier of Allah’s power to resurrect not merely a drop of semen emitted, then he was a clot of blood, then Allah shaped and fashioned him and made him a man. Then from his seed created male and female offspring. Is not Allah, Who does all of this, able to restore them to life after death?”[Soorahal-Qiyaamah (75):36-40]

          Qur'an 2:21-24 Surah Al-Baqarah (The Heifer)

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -

[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.

But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.

Why think separately of this life than the next, when one is born from the last? Time is always too short for those who need it, but for those who love, it lasts forever. Quote gotten from Dracula Untold.

Why not answer your question empirically? Ask someone who has died that had their heart restarted by a defibrillator. What they usually say is that there is a tunnel that you start moving thru. In the distance is a light. Then they feel a sharp pain in their chest; their soul is back in their body and their heart is beating again.

If the heart has completely stopped (flat lined) cardiac defibrillation is not indicated. In-hospital survival of cardiac arrest using defibrillators is as high as 20% [wikipedia]. This gives us enough people that have had a glimpse into the afterlife to learn more.

The same as before I was born, no awareness at all.
That's not what I WANT to believe, it's just that there's no evidence for a soul and it wouldn't make much sense anyway.
To clarify, let me explain why it doesn't make sense.
We are made of the same 'stuff' that plants, insects, animals and especially mammals are made of. Does an onion or a mosquito go to heaven? How many neural cells does it take for a "soul" to appear during gestation? Keep in mind that a neuronal cell is made of the same stuff, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen as any other cell or even non-living organic matter like petrol or diesel, amines, amides, etc.
I see no mechanism by which the coming together of these cells in a certain pattern makes something else appear in a different undetectable realm. By this very virtue of being undetectable it makes absolutely no sense too that anybody would make bold claims that we do have a soul and that it takes disproving it to not have faith in it.
What we do have evidence for is that electrical activity in certain patterns can process information and react to stimuli. Our computers do this and even though we have zero understanding of how it works our brains do this too. It's detectable and we can even modify it to change someones personality or make you choose to lift a different arm than the one you intended to. All these experiments have been conducted. Brain diseases like Alzheimers or dementia also modify an individual's personality beyond recognition. Does it influence the 'soul' it is tacked to in that other realm where 'souls' reside or does it suddenly recover after it detaches from the diseased brain? Rhetorical question obviously, it only reinforces my total scepticism on the feasibility of a soul.

What I WISH were true, however, is the muslim jihadi vesion of afterlife, the 72 virgins and stuff lol.

Extracted with slight modifications from “Mysteries of the Soul Expounded” ©1994 Abul-Qasim Publishing House

Scholars of various schools of thought [1] differ greatly regarding the nature and essence of the soul (nafs). Is it a part of the physical body or a non-essential characteristic [2] of it? Is it an entity consigned to dwell within the physical body?, or is it an independent essence in itself? Is the nafs the same as the rûh (spirit)? Finally, what happens to the soul upon death? Is it confined to its body and its grave? If not, is it free to move about in the unseen spiritual world and on the earth? [3]

Regarding this subject, leading theologians of various sects have put forward a host of conflicting opinions. It would be beyond the scope of the present work to examine each and every view put forward by the various scholars; however, a brief mention of some of their opinions regarding this issue is necessary. The correct view [4] is given, supported by sound reason and statements from the Qur’ân and the authentic sunnah.

      Various Incorrect Theories

According to the theologian, Abul-Hasan al-Ash’arî scholars differed regarding the rûh (spirit), nafs (soul) and hayâh (life force). An-Nadhdhâm, one of the leaders of the Mu’tazilah, [5] is attributed with having said that the nafs is the form of the rûh. He further claimed that the rûh is alive (i.e. animate) and e ists independently. In contrast to his view, other scholars alleged that the rûh is a non-essential characteristic of the human being, unable to exist independently of itself. Still others opposed both of these views and claimed that it is not known what rûh is – an essential characteristic or a non-essential characteristic.

The proponents of another theory claimed that man consists of a particular form contained within a physical body, however, they differed as to precisely what this form is. One group maintained that the form consists of four ingredients [6] from which the physical body originates and further develops. A second opinion was that it represents pure blood, free of impurities and contamination. Another view claimed that this form is the animate life in man, the sensual heat which pervades the body. And a fourth group proposed that the form is an essential element which causes all animate, living beings to function in a particular manner [7] yet is not separated from such beings and does not have a different structure. Although there are other opinions[8] defining this form within the physical body, the four previously mentioned views are a sufficient sample.

      The Correct View

What is considered as the most accurate view regarding the nafs and the rûh is that of Ibn al-Qayyim [9] which is affirmed by Ibn Abul-‘Izz al-Hanafî in his commentary on al-‘Aqeedat at-Tahâwiyyah. [10] They base their position on various verses of the Qur’ân and the traditions of the Prophet (S) as well as on sound logic and rational thought. According to them, man consists of a spirit and a body together. The spirit is an entity which differs from the physical, tangible body. It is a higher type of luminous (or light-like) being, alive and moving, and it penetrates the limbs, circulating through them as water circulates throughout the petals of a rose, as oil circulates throughout the olive and as fire circulates throughout the burning embers of coal. One may reasonably perceive the soul filling and occupying the body; its form, though non-physical, is molded into the body’s shape. [11]

The soul will maintain its penetration of the limbs of the physical body and continue to affect their sense, movement and will as long as these limbs remain sound. However, if they are overcome [12] and no longer accept the forces enacted upon them by the soul, the soul leaves the body and enters the spiritual world.

      Qur’ânic Evidence

Certain circumstances of the human soul are mentioned in various places of the Qur’ân.[13] Two such examples follow:

“Allâh takes soul at the time of their death and [the souls] of those that do not die during their sleep. He retains those souls for which He has ordained death, whereas He releases the rest for an appointed term.” [14]

In this verse it is stated that there are only two points in time at which Allâh takes souls: at death and during sleep. [15] When one sleeps, Allâh separates the soul from the body. If He has decreed death for a person at this point, the separation becomes permanent and the body no longer functions. In the case of one for whom death has not been decreed at that time, the soul taken during sleep is returned to its respective body upon awakening. However, the soul for which Allâh has decreed death need not necessarily be taken during sleep but may be taken at a time other than sleep.

“If you could see when the wrongdoers taste the pangs of death and the angels stretch their hands out, [saying], ‘Deliver up your souls. This day you will be awarded a degrading punishment.’ ” [16]

Here it is stated that death is painful for the disbelievers. Although they are ordered to surrender their souls to the angels, they are unwilling; therefore, the soul must be forced out as it does not wish to meet its punishment. [17] The terms “akhrijû anfusakum” used in this Qur’ânic verse literally means “expel or push out your souls,” indicating that the soul becomes a separate entity from the physical body
