For me, I tend to live by "Do not worry about what you want but don't have. Instead, be happy for what you don't want and don't have."
I have messed up many times in life and I am glad that the majority of my headaches are passed.
To answer directly, not having student debt would be my answer if I had to pick just one thing.
For the "material" things, I have had a few before and wasn't any happier. These days I enjoy wen I have something that I enjoy but paid next to nothing for it. Bargain hunting is my hobby.
I would like more self-discipline and wisdom. I have what I need to succeed; I just can't seem to make efficient or effective use of it.
I notice you operate well when you need to rise to an occasion. So, I've been designing occasions for you. But really, you would do better finding ways to fix things that no one can figure out. Go lobby members of parliament for a post-brexit deal compromise. So what if it scares you? You need to start thinking on your feet.
Honestly the happiest times in my life have been where I was unemployed. I had more free time to devote to hobbies, and less time spent doing mentally painful busywork for some prick. I was less stressed. I wasn't constantly exhausted, wishing away my life for the weekends/holidays/retirement. So yeah, having no job makes me happy.
I'm probably gonna get hated for this, but here goes...
Cars, car parts, luxury furniture, fancy electronics, a high quality whiskey, quality time with my parents, treating them and my girlfriend on a night out at a fancy place, buying presents for my loved ones, but for all of those things you need money. So I guess money makes me happy. I know, I know, I'm a materialistic prick and should be more spiritual, more yogi, more whatever, too many pigheaded capitalists like me... but let's face it...
Today's world is materialistic, without money you are out on the street. Without money you can't afford a doctor, or meds if you get sick. Or worse, afford care for your parents should they need it...
Without money, you can't make money, the days of going to a new town with 10 dollars and starting a business are long gone, so if you're flat broke, getting back to a normal life is gonna be a lot more difficult. Because most people judge you on your appearance and wealth... it's sad, but true. This is why the more money you have, the more you know who your true friends really are.
Living paycheck to paycheck is also not for me. Slaving all day, every day and saving for a week long vacation at a shitty all inclusive hotel is depressing as hell. I want more and I know I can achieve more, so I do.
And I'll tell 'ya this. Ain't no better feeling than seeing your business in the green, profits increasing, more clients, more work and your day job paycheck together at the end of the month. Add in second job paycheck and you can easily save good money every year.
And as you get more funds, you can invest more and occasionally treat yourself too.
That's where money really brings happiness to me. I'm a car guy, so having money to buy more cars and tune them makes me very happy.
When I bought my E420 Mercedes, I felt amazing.
I managed to afford one of my dream cars. It was no longer a bunch of pixels on my laptop screen, it was a real car in front of me, with the keys in my hand. It was an euphoric feeling.
I worked hard, I saved money and had enough to burn on the car of my dreams.
It's been the same with all the cars I've bought. It might seem stupid, but being able to afford those cars and having them in my garage, makes me feel better about myself and less of a disappointment and a failure.
The more money I make and the better and more luxurious life I can provide for my girlfriend, future family and elderly parents, the better I feel.
The higher the number in my bank account, the more successful I feel.
There are also the simple things in life. Being with family and friends, going fishing with my dad, drinking good whiskey, a walk in the mountains, etc... But those joys are only enhanced if you're wealthier. Because there are no worries, no fears, no regret, no self hate, so the richer you are, the more you can enjoy the joy and beauty of life.
So for me, money is essential to happiness.
Megadriver, we are living in a material world and you are a material girl.
ON a serious note though, some people are driven by the need for the finer things. My tastes are far simpler.
BTW in your country, is a Mercedes or BMW still considered "high end" like in the USA? I am guessing there are a lot more of them on the roads in Europe than in the US.
Living in a material world, living in a material world.
One of my favorite Madonna songs :D
It's an interesting concept you see...
In Bulgaria owning a post 2003 Mercedes, Audi, BMW, or Range Rover means you're rich. Owning a post 2010 premium luxury car means you're a high roller... Only politicians, mafia, big shot businessmen and a few doctors drive expensive new cars. Normal in a country where the average salary is just 400 Euros... My neighbor works 12 hours a day in a factory for just 200 Euros.
Your social status in the Balkans is largely influenced by the car you drive and the money you spend on a night out (when seen)...
So owning a Mercedes (or more than one) makes you a lot cooler than you really are.
And crucially your girlfriend/ wife should drive a massive SUV. It's why I want to buy my girlfriend/ future wife a big SUV. In Bulgaria, if your wife drives an SUV and you drive a premium car, you've made it. Everyone respects you. Cops fear you. Lesser fortunate drivers make room for you, cause they think you are either mafia, police or anyone else that will get them in trouble... You can park wherever you want, you are above everybody else. Sad but true...
Question: Do cars play a role in your socioeconomic status as much they do in the Balkans?
In Germany however owning a premium luxury car isn't that big of a deal... I mean most taxis, buses, police cars, ambulances and even delivery vans are Mercedes. My van at the car dealership is a Mercedes Sprinter automatic with an air ride seat... So my beloved E420 CDI with 400hp I love to brag about is seen as a regular car here. Same as with my C350e... It's a newer, fancier car, but still a car to most Germans...
The only people that would look at my car are other foreigners and car enthusiasts.
A german's idea of luxury is a large (200+ square meter) house with a big and *really* well maintained garden and the ability to go on vacation at exotic destinations. Most people in Europe would settle for any of the European seas for their beach holiday... Not rich Germans, they want to vacation on far away places such as Miami, Hawaii, Bora bora, Grand Canaria, Tenerife, etc...7
Extra points for owning a pool (epitome of luxury in Germany)
Germans and I assume other Europeans are above this X car = rich thing, but Eastern Europe isn't and won't be for a long time. And I know I'll sound like a dick, but I like it.
It's nice to go at the center of town, park right next to a crosswalk in front of the "No parking" sign and walk off, knowing nobody will fine you, because the mayor has ordered no expensive cars are to be clamped, towed, or fined for parking violations, since most of those cars are either government, or mafia...
A German's wealth is in their house, their vacations, their garden and their pool (if they have one).
A Bulgarian's wealth is in their car, the electronics and furniture they have in their house and the ability to splurge on a night out and feel like a high roller.
Nobody builds pools next to their house, cause the beach is maximum 300km away from the farthest point in Bulgaria, so a pool is pointless here. Only the obscenely rich have pools here.
I have always tended to believe that we are spirits in a the material world.
I'm the manager of a Peugeot dealership, I have my own cleaning/ gardening company and I drive a bus, or coach on Saturdays (second job) for extra cash (Not so much as a job, but a leisurely Saturday drive I get paid 600 a month for, cause I love driving)
I actually do respect Peugeot for their cars in the 70s, 80s and 90s and their incredible rally racecars and group B cars, but nowadays their cars are absolute garbage. *Err I mean they are contemporary and stylish, definitely not for everyone...
Peugeot has a long line of rally history and reliability that carries on into it's newest models. Did I mention our lease options that take away your old car and you get a enormous cashback on your new Peugeot.
*slight cough*
On a serious note, the French did practically invent front wheel drive, so that's a big thing.
World peace , harmony with nature , and no judgemental people on earth..
I like the idea of taking a break from the city and people, surrounding myself by plants/ the outdoors and getting myself some alone time, even if it's just for a short/light walk
About 70 grand would make it so I could go to school to become a diver and get my rv made so I would have a home that fits what I'll be doing and yea that would maje me very happt instead of workinh 2 full yime jobs
Maje it 110 grand I would be able to do that, go to Thailand get all my transition surgeries done along with paper work and have a little extra to be comfy while I look for work. So yea that would make me very happy. Id only wishes came true eh?
Meaningful friendships - someone to share life with who actually lives nearby, more money.
Guns to end it. Oh wait, I already have access to those. The guts to end it, then.
If I had lots of money, I would consistantly travle the world and work on my photography.
Just me. I live in a time and a place with nothing but freedom and opportunity.
Personally, i believe that buying things make you only temporarily happy, i think buying things for happiness make a person more depressed cause the person have to rely on buying items. At one point the person will stop getting the happy feeling and then have to find another way for being happy, and if they dont find another way, maybe the result is depression? I dont know if this makes sense though...
A more than substantial trust fund for myself, and one for my younger sister too! Also, I would like much improved health for both of my elderly parents! It would also greatly improve my life if my parents could somehow gain an interest in neuroplasticity, as well as gaining a better understanding of technology as a whole. I would love for my twelve year old cat's eyesight to greatly improve! I also would like to see both of my parents live to be 100 years old!
Oh, and I would like to be miraculously healed of all of my physical, mental and spiritual maladies!
I ask a lot, but why not?
More time. I wish that humans could comfortably and healthily live to be 200 years old. Imagine having a good 150 years of active life in you before you start to decay. I'm not afraid of getting old, I'd just like to postpone it for a while.
Getting gang banged EVERY week and not having to worry about STDs and STIs!
I would say money but I know how my work drive works so i would just say education. Because if I received money without the work it wouldn't feel as satisfying. That satisfaction is what I'm looking for rather than the direct contribution that money would bring.
I do not strive for a happy life. For me, it is far more important to feel satisfied. I have all the money I want, more career accomplishments than I ever expected, more international travel than anybody else I know. These are satisfying things. But what I have never had is a good fuck buddy. Oh well. God intended for me to be miserable. As long as I ignore God, I feel pretty good.
