I've never worked retail, but I did work weekends as a hostess at a Japanese restaurant. I didn't mind it too much. It was over whelming at first because the place was super busy. It also felt awkward at times since the entire staff besides the cooks, were chinese and spoke chinese to each other constantly.

I've never worked in either field and I've never wanted to, because I have a short fuse with bossy people and idiots and also a love of talking with interesting people.

However, I do enjoy selling at market stalls every couple of months because it's only for half a day and there's time to chat with people.

I've never enjoyed working in the food service industry, except as a waiter on a big ship. That was a great job, because you had a good excuse to spill food on an unpleasant customer, if it got a bit rough.
I really enjoyed working in a bait and tackle store in the Keys, to learn about fishing there. It was especially fun when it got busy, but I hated it when it was slow. They had a cantankerous old cash register and once in a while it just got confused and would stop working, so I'd have to run the store out of my wallet until one of the owners (who lived onsite) came to help. Damned machine.
