What do you think about education?

I am wondering what your opinion is on education in America. Please tell me what you think we could do to make it better-in other words, how could we get kids to be actually interested in learning. What are some strategies for Elementary, Middle, and High school? Sorry to burst your bubble, but longer days or longer school years are NOT an answer (anyone who suggests so has obviously forgotten the horrors of high school).

  • The school system is pretty bad in America, especially with the no child left behind act. With that bad schools don't get better and good schools receive all the funding. On top of all that, high school expects us to sit in a desk for 4 yrs and copy what the teacher writes down, then when we graduate we're expected to think for ourselves. Where's the logic in that?

Educational video games would make learning more interesting for kids I know. I was never more motivated to complete all of my work in school than I was when I knew I could play on the computer when I was done.

I have to disagree. Video games, while they may be better than just learning through books (because they are interactive) don't allow kids to use all their senses. Hands on learning is much more memorable. I'm not against video games (I love Okami!!!) but I don't think it's the best way to improve schools.

Whoa, hold your horses there missy! First of all, I never said that video games were the BEST way to improve schools. I only said that I know for certain that they would make learning more interesting for kids, which is what the original poster was asking.

Secondly, I disagree with your disagreement! video games are much more immersing than traditional teaching methods or even other media forms such as movies or books. Video game engage the operator in 3 of the 5 senses(being visual, auditory, and touch), which is the same senses they would normally be using in a teaching environment. Video games are arguably more memorable than "hands on" learning, and technically video games ARE hands on learning anyway. Even the military has been using video game type simulators for years and years and years! It is preposterous to argue their effectiveness.

There needs to be more focus on knowledge of self, philosophy etc.

In school everyone is expected to be academically skilled, and if not they're considered failures.

Most of the stuff I was meant to learn at school I've forgotten, because it was useless and arbitrary.

American education should focus more on the WORLD. Americans rarely know anything about what is going on outside of their borders.

That too, Americans seem to pretty much live in a bubble, where the release of filtered/controlled information is the norm.

I work in education and I could write a 100,000 word essay about what is wrong with it in this country. As for how I would fix it? Better men than me have tried and failed. I don't hold out a lot of hope.

In America (and Canada) kids are spoiled and dont understand the true value of education. Go to any 3rd world country and kids are dying (literally dying) to learn. Unfortunately, I think it starts in the home - I think the educational system should be a little more strict or open different schools focusing on different things - like if you need a more stict school for your kids, enroll in this school (parents understand the rules) - options maybe? I just know that some parents expect the school system to raise their kids and thats a grave missunderstanding
Perhpas a survey to all parents asking what they expect from the school system and address the results publicly
