What do you think about scottish independence?

So at the moment Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom.

At the end of the summer, Scottish people will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not Scotland will become an independent country, breaking up the United Kingdom. This vote is really a big deal. It's like if Texas decided to succeed from the Union, but arguably even bigger because Texas is one of 50 states in the US whereas Scotland is one of four countries of the UK.

Even if you don't know any of the context about this, or you live on the other side of the world and aren't affected in any way, I'm interested in what you think about this. What do you think?

I think Scotland should be an independent country. 18
I don't think Scotland should be an independent country. 15
I don't care/I don't know what to think/I just want to comment. 14

I think it's unfair for the rest of the UK to force a country to stay in our union if the majority of that country do not want to be a part of it. If they want to go, let them go.
Personally, with Scotland going independent I believe the cons outweigh the pros. I still can't really imagine them leaving. I've studied this for three years and wrote countless essays and have had countless debates on it. I just want it to be over man.

    • You are right, of course; the right decision is whatever the people say.

That's interesting - I imagine you know every issue inside out, then :) Are you a politics student/graduate, or something like that?

I'm a Law student. It is an interesting topic, because this will change the entire of the UK forever, but I'd still rather spend my time researching other topics. That's why I want it to be over so much. Three years of it- I'm bored man.

Not at all. It would be a bad deal for the United Kingdom and Scotland alike. It'd be much better if Scotland were to have more devolved powers whilst remaining a nation of the United Kingdom.

    • I think it would be really sad for the hundreds of years that we've had a peaceful Union to be thrown away because of temporary political dispute. Independence is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I'm totally with you on the devolved powers. Spreading power away from the centre is better for everyone; I'd like it to happen within different regions of England, too.

I don't know, it really is up to them but I read more about this earlier and saw a lot of negatives as well for the residents of the UK. Even if they do become independent, it's not going to be "solidified" for a while as although it'll happen immediately on paper, there would need to be many adjustments made. At first I thought this would mean Scotland would no longer be part of the EU but apparently they'd still remain as such as it would cause complications. I hope I heard that correctly but am not sure as I only skimmed over an article yesterday.

    • I believe you are right. Scotland would want to remain a part of the EU, and no doubt the wheels are already in motion to ensure it becomes a member if Scottish people do choose independence.

If they do choose independence, the transition period will be very interesting. Will Scotland keep the Pound? How will Scotland fit into the EU? How will power be devolved to Wales and Northern Ireland, and within England? I hope it doesn't happen, but if it does at least we'll get to see what happens next.

I think it's entirely up to them.

If they choose to leave, the rest of us in England, Wales and N. Ireland should respect their decision and work together for a painless parting of ways... Or 'conscious uncoupling' as Gwyneth Paltrow would put it.

I would be sad to see Scotland go, though. I'd rather see more devolved powers, instead of a break-up of the Union. I really like Scotland.

    • I feel the same way about Scotland. I love our Union, and it makes me feel sad that a lot of people in Scotland (and Wales and Northern Ireland) don't feel represented in it.

Devolution is important. English society needs to be awakened to the cultural diversity within the UK, because I don't think that many people who live in England are truly aware of it. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are distinctive places, and their people deserve as much devolution as they want.

As long as I can still get my Johnny black, I couldn't care less if Scotland moved to the moon.

I think they should become an independant country. They have endured too much from the English over the centuries.

That's a terrible reason to become independent.

The formation of the United Kingdom was a mutually beneficial political union. The Scottish weren't conquered by the English. We came together under the Treaty of Union.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Union

We've actually had hundreds of years of strong socio-political unity between England and Scotland (Ireland is a different matter).

Also, the UK includes Wales and N. Ireland, so the relationship between Scotland and England is a major factor, but not the only factor.

Whilst I think there are certainly reasons for Scotland to consider independence, I don't think fighting that happened hundreds of years ago is a very good one.

It would be rather great to see a Scottish flag at the Olympics, yep.
I've always thought of Scotland's culture as a unique entity compared to its southern neighbor.

I recall seeing that Scotland's GDP per capita is slightly higher than the UK. That's good. It will increase exports. You get to control your own currency. Of course, would savings possibly route south, taking lots of money out of the country? What happens with Scotland and the UK's debt?

But, what UK industries in Scotland would move out? That could be bad! Scotland would need to generate a super attractive business friendly climate to keep/attract foreign business to be there.

I say make a break for independence if it offers a huge financial opportunity? If not, sit and wait for advantageous timing, perhaps?

  • i Agree with Scotland wants independence then it is for them to decide, i think i will move to Scotland after independence better than staying with English Imperialism lmao, but serious if Scotland decides in the referendum it wants independence then good luck to them,
the only thing is annoying that they had to wait for 4 years boring debate the only thing that should of being said to win the vote is:

    (a) a Scotland being able to govern itself free from interfering Tory scum
    (b) Scotland being able to raise, and lower its own taxes and keep its own oil!
    (c) NO MORE ILLEGAL WARS ON BEHALF OF ENGLAND AND AMERICA
    (d) no more MODS on Scottish Soil.
    (e) More Money staying in Scotland and not Paying for an English Parliament to moan and think they know what is best for Scotland.
(f)you get the Government that Scotland elected and not one full of tory who have less members than are pandas in Edinburgh Zoo (Thanks Alex for that one)lol.
    and the Vote is won,
    Good luck Scotland

BTW Unionist are Stupid licking Tory Ass while their own people suffer under Tory English Imperialism.

BTW THis was not directed toward English People in General.

I agree with more autonomy for Scotland, Walles and North Ireland, not total independence. But if scottish people want independence, let them go ahead.
