Depends on what you define yourself as. Personally I see myself as my memories and interactions of different parts of my brain.

That's certainly the phenomenon that's causing me to type these words. I may be using hands, but other methods of typing could be attached to my brain and I wouldn't consider myself fundamentally changed.

Seeing as upon death the brain ceases to function and then decomposes. The interactions between different parts of it will have ceased and I will no longer exist in any form.

  • I believe that no one just stops existing. I believe that even though one might die physically, they'll always be alive spiritually and they go on to live their next physical life. I believe that a person's existance is endless and the number of lives one can have is indefinate. But that's just what I believe.

That's how I feel. I don't know for sure and don't think anyone can ever really be sure, not until you actually go there. It depends on the presumption that mind or body are not the same thing of course, but I've seen some decent arguments for that and in all my philosophy classes, that came out as being the most rational argument to me.

But if it's a basic principle of the universe that matter can neither be created or destroyed, and our bodies break down and become the earth, what does the consciousness break down to?

Just a simple summation without getting into the metaphysics and quantum mechanics side of things... that would be a much more long winded explanation as it's taken me years of reading to draw these conclusions. XD

I don't believe in the purgatory. I think that nothing happens. We just cease to exist. As a christian I also believe that someday God will return on earth and decide whom He will bring back from death. But for those who have died and are dying now they simply exist no more.

I feel that I would get lots of thumbing down because I've mentionned God in this comment.

I thumbed you back up one. Nobody should be thumbed down just for expressing an opinion. I'm not sure if I believe in a Divine Creator or not, yet, but I do believe in the right to believe in whatever you want without fear of persecution.

That means all you little shitfaced athiests (not to be confused with the ones who ARE respectful, not shitfaced) who thumb people like the above down for expressing their opinions freely can go sit on a railroad spike and bounce hard while rotating rapidly!! xP

This means that you aren't either because the contradictory seperation is that of exact opposites, making belief in only one possible, and in the strictest of senses. And as such you can't believe anything that you yourself just said.

      You are silly.

Our atoms break apart and return to the universe, soon to be part of many great things that we could never imagine even seeing.

If you think about it, the atoms that create you came from the universe. Some could be from stars, others from planets, and maybe some from another living creature that has passed away in another solar system. It's remarkable how far we have traveled without going anywhere at all.

I remember once meeting a heroin addict who had actually OD'd. He was dead for a good 20 seconds before the medics hit the critical spot in his heart and recusitated him. He recalled the whole experience vividly, being in darkness and seeing just a small circular hole of light. He said all he could feel was this insatiable urge for the light. A desire compelling and rapturous swelled through him for the light. Then he started heading towards it, the light growing in size rapidly until it engulfed him and he was resucitated, brought back from the dead.

It sounds cliche'd, but the intensity in which he told the story, I believe him. (plus people who knew him backed up the story) I was totally blown away with it the whole time I was thinking "wow, I'm talking to a zombie!" (living dead)

I think it's really hard for us to imagine a state of 'inexistance', and that is why we think about reincarnation, heavens, hells or some for of afterlife. But I find it funny that people here are literally saying like 'Yea, bro seriously this is what ACTUALLY happens', like they know all about it or something!

I don't know what happens and honestly I don't think about it ever. I don't dwell on death or what might come afterwards. I spend all my time enjoying my life right now, making the most of it, and hoping that I leave behind a legacy and won't just be forgotten. All men die, but only a few men live.

Ah if we're put in coffins, we couldn't become nutrients for the soil. :) I wouldn't want to remain here as a spirit, but if I would anyway, then I would just help people out then creeping them out, but then they would anyway. I think we do go to our afterlives/heaven; but I don't believe in hell. Ahah, but I'm a kid.. I wouldn't know anything would I.. ahha.. I believe that if God doesn't want us in Heaven, he wouldn't put us in hell, but he would make us relive again, or simply just die and be nonexistent. We possibly could be reincarnated into another animal or human being for sake instead of never existing again so I'd probably just chose that.. but I pretty much believe in all the above. Except that universe stuff. It varies from what people believe in or think or study or read.. or how your mind works :P

after we die their is state of resurrection in which we enter.. our souls our no more with us and they are taken away by God... our body then decomposes which means it mixes in soil acting as a source of minerals and nutrient to soil and food for other insects and animals... on the other hand the soul tends to stay with God till the day of judgment and on that day it will be returned to the body (remade) for questioning about deeds...

I'm a christian. I believe that after we die, our human body stays on the earth(becoming nutrients for plants), and our spirit goes to heaven. If you're a christian, you go to heaven. If you're not, you go to hell. Very strong words, but they're 100 percent true.

I'm a Catholic and I believe in Heaven and Hell and yes I believe in Purgatory. Sometimes of course I'm not sure but such is the nature of faith. If it could be proven outright it wouldn't be called faith.

Question needs to be clarified, as in, What happens to whom and to what, in what regard?

(I'm sure the question is actually, What happens to our consciousness/"self" when we die? It's a perennial.)

We die. Living people argue about what happened to us. For whatever reason, we don't tell them. Maybe because we don't exist anymore, or maybe because we want them to stress the whole issue as much as we did, in a slightly evil way. Maybe not.

Anybody who claims to know is overestimating their knowledge.

I voted for the plant food option even though I know that won't happen to me. I've left my bod to 'science', so anything they don't preserve'll get incinerated.

I kinda hope I'm wrong and it'll be something interesting. If I had a choice, I'd pick reincarnation and, having done the male thing, come back as a girl to find out if it's better or worse.

I think that the most logical position is to be agnostic. I don't know what happens after death. There is not enough evidence to accept or reject any possibilities. If someone believes strongly in a religion, then that's great for them. That makes some people very happy. It is actually the atheist viewpoint that I respect the least. I think it is unreasonable and arrogant to dismiss all possibilities of an afterlife.

Our body goes back to where it came from, the earth. Our consciousness goes somewhere else. Who knows? But I believe it goes back to where it came from too, wherever that may be. And the cycle begins again. I don't believe our consciousness is that unique a concept that it would fail to adhere to this very normal reality of cycles in the world. But maybe?
