"The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays." - Soren Kierkegaard

I always kind of agreed with this statement.

This answer is for the general public, no harm intended.

I am an atheist and I do not jug anyone who is religious. I look upon things by simple logic.

If their is a God, praying, going to one church should not effect anything at all. If a God was to exist all religions are wrong.

Let me explain, Catholics, protestants, Jewish, Islam and so on all have the practical same narrow view. There God is the real God. If a God would exist, that God would not care about how people worship him, as long as they get along.

This is one of the main problem in the world, humans are narrow self indulgent species. You don't see wars in animals, you don't see injustice, you don't see rape on discrimination, this is all 100% human.

Just try to get along, and keep praying if you want too but stop being narrow minded and open you're eyes to others and get along with them.

Animals have wars, rape and have just as inhumane expressions as humans do. I would say it's the other way around. Being human is being aware and able to stop our own nature.

I think praying is not just about asking something from The Big Man up stairs. You can talk to God not just about your personal problems (even though he knows everything what exactly is going) but you can also let him know how blessed you are. People prey to meditate as well. I am not a religious person but I did grew up in a Catholic home.

If your gawd "even though he knows everything what exactly is going" then why does it allow pedophiles to rape and murder children? It sound like a perfectly horrible, hateful entity. Perhaps your gawd enjoys watching these sorts of atrocities. Perhaps that's how it gets it's jollies?

I'm gonna guess that you didn't bother reading my last statement, I'm not a religious person plus what exactly are you getting out of asking a question like this?

I now prefer to ask for knowledge of God's will for my life, and the strength and courage to carry that out. I also talk to God about when I'm grateful. I feel like I've had many more blessing in my life since I changed.

I'm not a fan of just asking him for shit. I we ain't supposed to have it he ain't gonna give it to us. Praying in a Dear Santa style is a good way to make one's self feel unloved, and neglected by God.

Take away logical thought and reasoning and people find themselves praying at their most desperate of times.

Praying is a comforting exercise in wishful thinking for people that blindly believe. Contemplating good thoughts is a more secular way to soothe your mind.

I think it's rather dismissive when one refers to people of faith as blindly believing. For those of us who believe, listen to and talk to God we have plenty of proof in the blessings he bestows upon us. For a believer in God there are no coincidences and there's no such thing as luck. Contemplating God's mercy and blessings is how I soothe my mind.

I'd rather believe in God as opposed to the alternative.

The other day, my son was talking about " Aeropostales" , he thinks they are Jesus followers in the bible:)

Some people have belief based in philosophy, and ethics. I respect that. But since I am devoutly scientific, I require a rigorous test not influenced by my selective perception. Statisticians call this test Chi Square. I have run it, and it always shows that God has given believers, and non-believers alike completely random outcomes.

Contemplating verifiable advanced mathematical theorems about the origin, mechanics of the universe as well as of our world is how I soothe my mind. To some people it is cold. To me it is REAL.
