What does emo mean?

I've seen it used in different ways but what exactly does it mean? And is it normal? Thanks!

you can tell what emo music is coz its got that highpitched wining, thats really annoying. and every so often they switch from this to screaming then back to a perfectic whine.

Im not sure if Deftones and The Cure fit in that list. Also beware of bands that are not emo but may be inaccurately labeled as such

    Like...
    Nirvana
    Orgy
    Nine Inch Nails
    Bush
    Julian-k

    etc.

      Agreed.

The Cure is Goth. Deftones are Metal.

      Both are good.

As a mix of Metalhead/Goth/Punk, I confuse a lot of people, unintentionally. But, also as someone who loves all three, I would hate for anyone to confuse any one of these with emo.

You should be able to tell what's emo pretty easily seeing as each emo band will talk about how deep the hurt and why they cut themselves. If there's no cutting, it's not emo. Also, the screaming is kind of lame in emo music.

Listen to Children of Bodom or Slayer for good metal screams.

  • Emo is a subculture, a genre of music, and a clothing style.

It's people who dress a certain way and listen to emo music.

The most known emo bands are my chemical romance, 30 seconds to mars, 3 days grace, the used, underoath and many more.

The emo style is to dye your hair black and grow it so that part of your hair covers one of your eyes, and to wear eyeliner, and to wear certain kind of clothes like what is found at hot topic.

Also most emos have a myspace and write dramatic things like how their life sucks and sometimes they cut themselves.

I personally like emo music and the style, and think emo girls are really hot.

Somebody who calls themself emo and says the bands above are not emo and cites old bands like "city of caterpillar" which is not a emo band is a emo poseur and does not know what emo is. A real emo does what i said above and is not just trying to "follow the crowd".

One of several late 20th- early 21st century examples of mass conformity attempting feebly to masquerade as unique or different. People who like the NFL and drink Bud think they are the average person, whereas people who are emo think they are different. The truth has flip-flopped over the past 20 years: people who drink Bud and watch NASCAR are the distinct marginalized minority, whereas the combined indie-goth-emo-hipster cultures make up the powerful mass culture majority of people under 30 in the early 21st century.

Just kidding, I think it comes from the word emotional, as the stereotype like to wear black and wallow in depression and feelings of doom and gloom, broken relationships etc...or so it seems. Maybe thats wrong, anyone ever seen a happy emo?? I'm really not sure if theres a difference between emo and scene but I prefer the "scene" look, it seems more colourful than the emo thing and they have fantastic hair :)

    • Emo, as most 'emos' will tell you, means to be emotional and a bit on the downside, due to trauma or depressing thoughts. Those who aren't actually sad in any way are posers.

      EMO IS NOT A STYLE!
      EMO IS NOT A STYLE!

The 'emo style' is called Scene. Some emos dress scene, but you could be emo and wear abercrombie and finch. It really depends on your personality.

@sharapove: it's natural for one to be more liked by people with similarities, so an emo guy is usually an emo girl's first choice. But unless they're shallow, they'll probably take a chance with a normal person. And i've never really met an emo lesbian. it's usually the guys who are gay.

Argh. I need to spell this out for some people who've posted here:
    Emo - alternative subculture.
    Self-harm - psychological coping mechanism.
THE TWO ARE UNRELATED, save the fact that some 'emo' kids identify with the need to self-harm, but are thick enough to use it as part of their 'fashionable' identity.
Did all you kids understand that?

Okay this is coming from a non-biased point of view.
Emo= Emotionally Unstable = The stereotypical emo who 'slits their wrists' and wears a shitload of eyeliner, writs depressing poems, never laughs, wears black constantly even their hairbands are black and stuff. This is what a stereotypical emo is aka poseurs or what other people with don't know what emo is use to describe them.

My Chemical Romance = They have said THEMSELVES that they are not emo and so not like to be labled as such. 12yr old kids listen to them when they want attention. I would know, I have met the kids.

Emo = Emotive Hardcore = A genre of music. A subcategory (sp?) of rock. Usually screamo but with normal singing in it as well. Usually more emotional lyrics than other screamo music. NOT whiny little singers singing about how they want to kill themselves. That is a stereotype.

Emo = As in the dress sense = Usually jeans, blue or black. Converse, hoodies and a band t-shirt. Not to be confused with scene.

Scene = Dress Style = Usually skinny jeans, Brightly coloured converse, high top Nikes, band t-shirts (featuring bands such as Dot Dot Curve:), You Me At Six, Spanky, The Medic Droid, Breathe Carolina etc These are not all the bands that are scene) Them weird hat things, (like the chav/gangsta ones but better) Also crazy belts with studds and stuff. The OLD scene hair was coontails random brightly-coloured streaks (anyone who wears their hair like that nowadays is a poseur)

If I am wrong correct me, but do so nicely.

Emo is short for "emotional". It was originally used for the poet type person. But, since lonelyness is the most common and predominant feeling that a human gets, it has been turned into a slang for sad and depressed people.

However, this has seemed to be changed into the new fad in which a person wears tight, colorful pants, too much eye-liner, and cuts themselves for attention. It is far more common in males than females. The female equivalent are what used to be known as the "prep" in the 90's and early 2000's.

Emo is a justification for taking elaborate pains with your appearance, and for conforming to a social scene. It is very "emo" to claim that you are a nonconformist individual, while paying inordinate amounts of attention to making sure your music, your hair, your outfit, and your attitude are all appropriately in line with the emo schema. "Scene" kids are exactly the same thing, without even bothering to pretend like they're individuals.

    *sigh.
    people, please.
The STEREOTYPICAL emo is the dark punk who cuts they're wrists e.t.c.
But the author asks "what does it mean" not "what is it".
Emo basically means an emotional depressive. EMO= emotional (as Astinos pointed out). That what it means. It's not a "subculture" its a type of person. Origionally. Now a lot of people have made it into punk music, half-goth stuff. But the wrist-slitting stuff is origional, since the depressed usually find amusment out of self-harm.
Yes it is normal. But also nothing's normal. You've got a way of thinking, then go with it. Emos are depresssed so they do what they think is what they should do.
    Hope ive been helpful.

and your hoping a guy will see them and see how sensitive you are and you run off into the distance together you like listerning to guys on songs moaning in a girly sorta cry in an annoying accent. you analyse every lyric and tell yourself this is wrote for me, even tho this guy wrote it in a few days why he was stoned probably
you think if you cutt yourself some guy or a friend might go, dont cut yourself, and you say i have no one and they say you have me and you go ahhh i do now im glad my arms is gushing. hey lets cut together. you wear black because its in the stereo type, and it covers up your natural uglyness. that my friend is an emo!

Nothing wrong with being emo, the subculture (which still exists today, yes it does) has earned a bad reputation from 12 year olds who pretend to be depressed and bulimic and self harming and listen to the Jonas Brothers and My Chemical Romance and say how emo they are. They are just fucking annoying.

Actually being emo just requires a love of music.

    * from www.wikipedia.org*

Emo (pronounced /%%u02C8i%%u02D0mo%%u028A/) is a style of hardcore punk which describes several variations of music with common roots and associated fashion and stereotype. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk which originated in the Washington, D.C. music scene. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the emotional performances of bands in the Washington, D.C. scene and some of the offshoot regional scenes such as Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and later, Moss Icon. (In more recent years, the term "emotive hardcore" entered the lexicon to describe the period.)

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to refer to the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason had a more indie rock style of emo, more melodic and less chaotic. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles. As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the mainstream style. As a result, the term "emo" became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music.
