What is/are your favorite quote(s)?

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Abraham Lincoln's quotes always give me so much thought. I'm guessing what he ment by this quote was that it's best to have proof and facts before speaking. It's wisest to speak up when you have actual facts; to not be ignorant and folly.

So what are your favorite quotes or quote? And what are your thoughts upon this quote?

I love that quote! 16

    "For several hundred years, what we really taught children was to respect power, authority, and violence - but not other human beings."

    "When children cease to cooperate, it is either because they have cooperated too much for too long, or because their integrity has been harmed, It is never because they are uncooperative."

    "Generally, children react self-destructively towards violations. That is, when parents, consciously or unconsciously, violate their children's integrity in the same way and at regular intervals, children do not conclude that their parents have acted wrongly. They assume that they themselves are wrong! Losing their sense of *self-esteem*, they accumulate a sense of *guilt* or *shame*."

    ...I could go on and on. These are all from "Your Competent Child" by Jesper Juul. I absolutely love his work. Reading it really changed how I look at my work and my upbringing, and how I want to change how I relate to children I work with.

      If the author which you had cited is correct, then for several hundred years, we have been teaching children incorrectly.
      To 'respect', means 'to look back at'.
      How does one look back at power?
      How does one look back at authority?
      How does one look back at violence?
      The only reasonable way to do this, is to discontinue teaching a child these concepts or behaviours.
      How does a child look back at [the life of] other humans? They have very little life experience. The only way that a child could respect an elder human's life accomplishments, is if they learn these things from others.

      Please note: The use of 'being', relative to humans, should be self-evident, and is superfluous. I think that most everyone will agree that a human is living and does exist, unless they are now deceased.

        Your use of the word "respect" is Archaic.

        I agree and disagree, with the second quotation.

        When a child ceases to cooperate, it could be due to their integrity being harmed. In this, one needs to be careful, on which definition of 'integrity' one uses, but 'the quality or state of being complete or undivided', I can agree with. Otherwise, someone has taught the child divisive behaviour(s).
        However, I disagree with the first part, in this. I think that most any child could be conditioned for cooperative behaviours, unless they have a severe developmental problem. If they are uncooperative, I think that it is due to poor parenting skills, plain and simple.

          Violations have now been outlawed by The Management, on this Web site.
          Would the children on this Web site, please re-construct themselves.

          How would a parent violate, unconsciously, a child's integrity?
          We are either conscious, or we are sleeping.
          Maybe they were sleepwalking?
          More likely, is that the parent was ignorant.
          The parents have acted incorrectly, if they have violated the child completely and repeatedly, and should probably be cited for child abuse.
          The parent has also not instructed the child 'never to assume things', learn about them, and / or help them to learn about them.

        Wisdom is about making your life much more simpler; it's just people don't make it that way themselves.

        It is you who makes your life the way it is. Yes, you do need to be cautious of course, it is wise to do so but it is your inner-self who causes your own internal pains and suffering. Don't be around negative people too much but it is great to be their to help them. Love yourself then you'll love others. You need to see the positives in people as much as possible. Life is about compassion and kindness like Dalai Lama says.

        Great example the quote: "love is blind" When you love others you look at their flaws a lot less. Don't just find positives in certain people, find it in every human in existence.

        Wisdom is about keeping biased opinions and stereotyping thoughts out of your head and seeing everyone as human beings; even the negative ones. The negative ones just need help and by pointing them in the right direction the right way (without harm), helps them, you and others around. If you don't end up helping them at least you tried and that is what is joyful.

        Negativity is a waste of time for wise people. "Life with no fear, regrets and worries." It is in the present which is reality and of course in the grey. People who are in the black and white are not in reality. You've got to look to change your own flaws; to improve them patiently and also improve your strengths. :) By seeing both sides of yourself and excepting it, you are more happy and in the grey. Do not dwell on you pasts use them to improve yourself "today", do not fear the future as you can't see it yet look at it to be positive, planning as you go helps. Be proactive. Of course there will be bumps a long your path but you can get back on your own two feet. Mistakes and failures are ways to see how you can improve, it's wise to see it that way. They are opportunities; every single problem is an opportunity and there is more than one solution to solve that problem.

        Ok, I have said quite a bit. Hope it all makes sense to you all.

    I have a few.
    "Curiosity killed the cat" basically means that being curious can lead to trouble. I have since used that to name my own one.
    "Persistence killed the cat", even unnecessary persistence can lead to trouble. Something I frequently tell my younger cousin as he tries to beat me at every, single, thing.

    Famous quotes.
    "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion."
    - Alexander the Great

    "Stumbling seven times, but recovering eight."
    Means: Perseverance is better than defeat.
    - Japanese Proverb

    "A fall into a ditch makes you wiser."
    Means: You learn from mistakes
    - Chinese Proverb

    I have more, but my favorite is Alexanders one.
    It can mean lots of things.
    - An army of Lions would turn on their leader (sheep) and rebel, but an army of sheep wouldn't turn on a lion.
    - Lions are strong. If a man is a fierce and deadly as a lion his killing intent can make even sheep deadly.
    - A powerful leader can make even the weak, threatening.
    - It shows value of leaders.
    - Its not the quality of the soldiers, but the one who leads them.
    - You should be afraid of the mind (lion leader), and not the body (sheep army)
    - Being stupid can make even powerful lions pathetic.
    And more.

    i love this poem ''It was many and many a year ago,
    In a kingdom by the sea,
    That a maiden there lived whom you may know
    By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
    And this maiden she lived with no other thought
    Than to love and be loved by me.

    I was a child and she was a child,
    In this kingdom by the sea;
    But we loved with a love that was more than love-
    I and my Annabel Lee;
    With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
    Coveted her and me.

    And this was the reason that, long ago,
    In this kingdom by the sea,
    A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
    My beautiful Annabel Lee;
    So that her highborn kinsman came
    And bore her away from me,
    To shut her up in a sepulchre
    In this kingdom by the sea.

    The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
    Went envying her and me-
    Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
    In this kingdom by the sea)
    That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
    Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

    But our love it was stronger by far than the love
    Of those who were older than we-
    Of many far wiser than we-
    And neither the angels in heaven above,
    Nor the demons down under the sea,
    Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

    For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
    Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
    In the sepulchre there by the sea,
    In her tomb by the sounding sea''

          Yes, if it's meaningful to them, then the message/topic of the quote is something they've most likely spent a considerable amount of time pondering and feel is relevant in their lives. Reading the different users' favourite quote[s] is like a secret path into their private thoughts and feelings. They are telling everyone something intimate about themselves. The quote they share appeals to them, so much so, they want to share it with others as if to say; "this is the idea of another person that I subscribe to" (for whatever reason).

            Why, thank you madam Cheese :)

            Wait, i'm unsure what i did. Lol.

            I was serious about the happy quotes. Though, i still can't think of any. Hmmm... Maybe i'll have to look some up later.

              Lol. Nevermind what I had commented.

              But here are a couple happy quotes by The Dalai Lama that I like:

              "If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them."

              "In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher."

              Here is one I thought was funny by him:

              “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”

    'Don't throw stones in glass houses'

    My house isn't glass but if you came over and started chucking rocks at the walls I would kick your ass out.

      People who live in glass houses should undress in the basement.

    Lol when I picked the fourth option I had no idea it would seem so harsh. What I meant was that for me this quote was about keeping calm and collected not just speaking your mind but they're pretty similar. Now, I certainly do feel like a fool.
