What is god to you?

To me, God is an entity/force/energy that connects us all. God is light. God is androgynous and neutral, but serves a greater good. And God is indescribable, inconceivable, abstract and possibly so close we can't see.

What is God to you?

something good 20
something bad 2
something neutral 8
something... 11
nothing 33

    Something akin to faeries, dragons, and Gandalf.

  • I don't get how people can say they believe in God yet they'll not think of God in the way that originally makes you believe there is a God. Kind of reminds me of how the religious will follow their religion's rules (the word of God Ooooooo) and then change a rule to something they want, still claiming it's the word of God. If you're going to believe in religion then do so, you can't change the rules, same goes with "God" in my opinion.

    I'm not sure God exists, I'm pretty agnostic although if he did exist then he's a douchebag and an abusive father. Especially with the whole Lucifer thing...Making your child to be the best of the best and giving him freewill just to say he isn't allowed to live by his free will and has to serve humans who aren't as great as him? All while knowing that Lucifer would end up how he did prior to making him? Dick move.

    My favorite interpretation of God is the one my old Chem teacher had. She said she just saw God as some genius who made the Earth as some science experiment, and then just left it at that. It's interesting, and makes God a neutral entity, instead of some creepy thing to be worshiped...

    I mostly agree with you. However I don't believe god serves the greater good. Good and bad are human constructs. God simply is.

          Really? Well that's interesting that you feel "entitled" to your opinion, yet you feel the right to absolutely bash and write off anyone who happens to be religious. Apparently, YOU are entitled to YOUR opinion, but they aren't entitled to theirs. Your blatant hypocrisy is showing itself again, for the one millionth time.

          I'm not religious myself; personally I don't believe in god, but my father does. He does not fit any of the stereotypes you associate with religion, but yet you feel the right to tar everyone who does.

          YOU feel justified acting like a fucking child, calling people stupid, judging them because they happen to disagree with your life views, which by the way you can not prove or disprove. YOU feel the right to throw tantrums and call names and talk down to those who don't share your opinion, and you do it constantly.

          I'm not surprised that the libtard morons on this site thumb up your idiotic comments merely because the majority are atheists, as am I.

          I, however, am not arrogant enough to fucking constantly and obsessively trash people with different views. If you were bashing homosexuality or libertarianism, you'd probably get a different response...but it's perfectly ok for you to be an ignorant, judgmental, old dried up turd as long as it's regarding something that people here agree with.

          I find your opinions to be consistently narrow minded, hypercritical, needlessly disparaging, idiotic, hypocritical and disgusting. I'll elaborate if you want. You're a fucking piece of shit.

          And for once, I agree with shitduz- cunts who thumbed me down, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

          No wonder crusades turned to trolling.

            [Quick disclaimer: I haven't voted on any of the comments on this poll. I'm also an atheist but I'm not defending either you or him.]

            I agree that TheGypsySailor makes insensitive remarks about religion, but other users who posted here have made (less insensitive and less frequent) comments about it, too.

            Given the above, picking out TGS and telling him in particular (when there are other comments which echo similar but less extreme perspectives) reads more like you're *only* sick of him *repeating himself* (which I assume is why the votes were against you) rather than being sick of his mindset.

              You're complet-ly correct. It's not just frustration with his mindset, it's with him as well. I probably should have left that out of the equation.

              Btw- you should come here more often, kiwi. I always <3 your advice, and btw, I do remember your advice on my thread, and I thank you. It really helped.

            I agree with the one thing you said - In a different environment, gypsy might get downvoted much more. I have seen him get downvoted harshly for certain things... But this site is mostly populated by atheists or agnostics so comments criticizing religion are widely accepted. Honestly I can't understand the atmosphere of IIN sometimes.... I'll start to think its predominantly liberal and then I see some posts/comments that change my perception.

            Anyway, I can understand why Gypsy feels that way about religion... But he does knock it at pretty much every given opportunity. I'm not taking sides, just wanted to give my two cents :) thanks countess

              Yes!!! Sometimes the mindset on here is backwards and it honestly frustrates me. I wish I wasn't too lazy to write out appropriate comments when necessary.

              I THINK about what I want to say...and then I'm all...ahhh, fuck it, there's no point in arguing with these cunts; they'll never change their minds.

              You are absolutely right. I will give you that...my comment was slightly immature, and I have sunk to your proverbial level.

              To be honest, I, from time to time, agree with the content of your messages, but I strongly, strongly disagree with with the manner in which you deliver them.

              I'm guilty of being blunt and rude from time to time, but you seem to always be on the attack. I quite often shake my head at the things you say and the manner in which you say them, and yes, I don't always speak up about it right away, mostly because I think it is nearly impossible to get through to you.

              I think it is worth pointing out, that for someone who is quick to speak up against racism, homophobia, etc, you come across as very narrow minded, closed off, and judgemental, quite honestly.

              I think that some of the advice you give would be valuable and insightful if it wasn't accompanied by insults and hypocrisy...

      E=MC^2
      Energy = matter
      God spoke and the sound energy of his voice became matter which took whatever shapes and forms He willed it to be. He hasn't told us everything there is to know. He has only told us what we NEED to know. Of course we can't understand how some things can be, just like the gear inside a coocoo clock can't understand how the engineer/clockmaker designed and manufactured it. The gear only knows to do what it was designed to do when all the other parts around it are doing what they were designed to do. It has no choice but to obey. We were given a free will so we can question and reason and choose not to obey, if we want to think we are smarter than our designer. But if we're so smart why can't we make something out of nothing?

    I have often pondered the possibility that God is a universal consciousness of sorts, with beings that possess limited pieces of consciousness being parts of this ultimate being - in the way that electrical impulses, neurons, and various other units by which our brains can be measured make them up, so too do we make up the mind of god, which is simply mind itself. Or perhaps we exist in the mind of God, or rather in the perception of God, as Bishop Berkeley believed, or perhaps we exist in the infinite dreams of a slumbering deity, or something silly and unoriginal like the rest of the things I've written above. I once wrote a story for a class I took - life and everything in our universe was the product of a story that is being eternally written by some woman (whenever I don't picture god as just some cliche tautology like "god is, and what is is god - god simply is god, who is also god, and what is is god, therefore, what is is also is" I tend to view god as a woman). Or maybe God isn't real.
