Don't take any advice from here without consulting your doctor. You can do irreparable damage.
If you can't afford Stem Cell Therapy, try yoga &/or tai chi. Everyone I know over 60 who tried it said their back pain reduced & their balance improved after a few months.
Something like supermans, or a similar exercise which is suitable for you.
Two things help cardio workouts and strength workouts. Walking for long distances is really good but eventually work up until you can do some jogging. Thats probably the very best for your back. It loosens everything up. It doesnt sound like it would but it does.
Also barbell squats are good after you're already in decent shape but with this start VERY lightly. Start with like 50lbs and only do one set of like 5 reps. Then dont do it again for an entire week. Eventually work your way up to doing 3 to 5 sets but still only once a week and increase the weight gradually. Dont do it more than 2 days a week because its hard on your knees and back.
Ive had alot of experience with back issues ive had 2 fuckin back surgeries before I turned 30.

....Do you not train legs in a serious manner? You've had a 6 pack & were about 10% body fat at one point. I do 2 sets of 100 of those with a 4 minute break with the same weight for warm ups on-top of being about 80lb's heavier then you with a beer gut. Also never felt sore in my knees or back afterwards, it's just to light too.
Yeah I do squats with 225lbs now usually 8 reps and 5 sets. Then I move to to deadlifts, legpress, leg curls, and calf raises. I only do it once a week but I stay sore for a few days after it. It seems to be working my ass and legs are definitely growing lately.
I started with 100lbs after my back surgery and it made me so sore the first time. Then I tried to do squats 3 days a week and my knees were shot. If you have a serious back injury squats can be VERY dangerous.
