What is up with nurse hero worship?

Especially emphasized now because of Covid. There are many other people putting their lives at risk to help and serve. Why and how did nurses get selected?

So? just because other people do good things you can’t like a specific group for doing good things? It’s not a competition, and that’s where your issue is.

    • Umm... I am a nurse. It’s my job. I signed up for it but I am not any tougher than anyone else here on the front line. We are all scared and the added pressure of being the “hero” adds to the stress.

Just doing your job as a nurse as best you can is enough, you don't have to try and live up to the hero label.

Well unless people are coming up and calling you hero instead of using your name then I don’t really see how it makes any difference to your job or how you do it.

      • Rich? Far from it. And what about lil ol me? Well, I have a close family member dying from this shit, and there’s not a fucking thing this hero nurse can do about it. Thanks for asking.

I hadn’t actually considered this from a nurse’s perspective, people acting as though you have superpowers must be a heavy burden, especially when faced with the tragic situation of helplessly watching as a loved one passes away.

I agree with some other commenters that people need their heroes in a time like this and medical staff have been placed on a pedestal, but we need to remember that you’re just human beings doing what you can and we can’t expect miracles.

I’m very sorry for your sad situation with your relative.

Nurses, Doctors, First Responders, the college students helping out no matter what. They are directly at risk of contracting it. Truck drivers, anybody out there working to help keep some sort of a notmal life goingfor the rest of us that cant seem to sit still at home and just have to go out in public and no PPE.

They chose their jobs; why do we need to praise them?

Possibly because unlike grocery workers, delivery drivers, etc. nurses signed up for putting their lives at risk.
Grunt essentials aren't heroes, they're slaves. They always were, but now it's blatantly obvious. If we brought too much attention to them, they would point out how disgusted they are with what they're forced to go through to take care of their families. The media did briskly touch upon these 'heroes' and that was the response. That's not very lovey dovey for society 'in these trying times'.

It’s brave to be a frontline worker during this time and nothing more so than a nurse who is at the frontline of the frontline and it’s a showing of gratitude to help with morale during difficult times
I know it won’t sit right with some, who don’t wish such attention or are bothered by large scale groupthink when it takes hold, but for many nurses I think it would mean something, however little, for them to feel society’s appreciation of them during a pandemic.

Don’t forget this is a mental health battle as much as a physical one. And gosh people are doing terrible things to one another daily, we shouldn’t discourage any act of humanity that unifies us.
    Just my 2 cents

All medical professionals are heroes because they are serving the sick and isolating from their families. Nurses don't get paid as well as doctors. The other people that clean the hospitals are heroes too and don't get the love they deserve. True heroes.

yeah I think they are going a little too far with this praise the nurses shit.

Do it for free then I might give you respect.

Nurse worship was pathetic anyway, they’re doing their jobs and treating people with a flu like virus. They’re not ‘risking their lives on the front line.’ This isn’t a war.

Of course they are risking their lives you thick fuck head. Every time they go to work they are exposing themselves to the risk of catching this deadly virus from the patient’s they are treating. Compare that to someone tucked up safely in isolation and it’s fucking obvious why we class them as being on the front line. You really are thick if you can’t follow that train of thought.

What’s really thick is mindlessly believing the sensationalised propaganda you see on the news. This ‘deadly virus’ is the equivalent of seasonal flu, the vast majority of the people dying are old/have compromised immune systems. Actually read up on the death statistics before commenting next time.

Perhaps you would like to explain then why so many previously healthy people in there 20’s 30’s and 40’s have died. Some of them having contracted it working on the front line as doctors, nurses and carers

People are calling themselves heroes for sitting home playing video games. I think it's like a media thing to try and inject some positivity into this while still keeping the fear campaign going.
