They tell you the capacity of the memory, but they don't tell you how much space the operating system takes up. They're not lying and their advertising is true, but you just get a little less because the actual iPod needs some memory for it to work.

Has been the case for every harddrive sold in the last 20 years. Size is quoted before formatting

Ok dood my 8 gig touch said it was a 7 gig when I plugged it into my computer. Ya gotta remember that
Sh*t like safari,YouTube, maps, and mail take up some space.

Can you honestly not live with out the 3.62GBs??? Dear lord if it's not enough go buy a bigger iPod or whatever (but it's the same story for most of these devices).

Then why don't they jus put extra memory on them to cover the controls firmware ect ect to even it out is that so hard to do?

To begin you must understand a couple basics, I’ll make this easy. I’ll try my best. A GB is 1000 MB. But a computer is binary. Each bit can only be on or off. So 2 bits can make 2^2 different numbers =4. And likewise 3bits make 2^3 numbers = 8. Following this pattern you will see you cannot actually make 1000 (MB); 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024. And in the first we discussed that a GB is 1000 MB. So a GB or 1 billion bits / 1024 thousand bits. (A thousand, thousand is a million). The best you can (format) this 30 GB drive to is 2.92. The storage is really there, just the way it is formatted tells a different tale.

Previous post is right. It's 32gb TOTAL memory. Don't forget iPods come with the iTunes program in them for non-apple/mac owners. And there is some memory use for the controls/functions of the iPod. Besides you're not loosing that much storage space to be so worked up over it.

It is actually 32gigs but with the software and other things that come on the iPod it's obviously less
