What is your opinion on nintendo taking down rom websites and fan projects?

This happened a while ago, but Nintendo took down the ROM websites LoveRoms and LoveRetro and a fan project named AMR2 (Metroid 2 remake, basically) for copyright infringement. As a huge fan of emulation and retro games, i am still outraged. Other ROM sites such as CompleterROMS and Emuparadise were also taken down or the ROMS are no longer available. Again, outraged. What are your opinions on Nintendo's rampage of ROM and fan game destruction? Is it ethically correct of Nintendo to take down all of this?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Urgh, fuck them. Discouraging fanwork is detrimental to the popularity of a game, anyways.

They own the copyright to the games. They don't have to let someone else infringe on their copyright. They are a business.

Yeah, but these are 25+ year old games we're talking about. So i don't know how infringing a 25 year old game is going to make Nintendo less money (they don't even really sell these games anymore) . Besides, just because somebody has the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

It's their business. They own the games. They can do whatever they went with their own games. It doesn't matter how old the games are. TV stations can't show old movies without paying royalties. If I wrote a book 30 years ago, and I found out someone was handing out copies for free, I would stop them.
