... atheism is not a religion :) Remove that and add "I have NO religion" instead.

i was raised a christian. i have no idea what branch. i lost my faith in history class, where not only did we learn about other religions in a purely educational manner (no "here is why hinduism sucks and christianity is the only right religion"), but i also met the only non- christian/athiest person i had ever met- a muslim girl, whose name i cannot remember for the life of me. i asked the teacher, "why is she wearing that?" he replied, "its a hijab, and it is costomary for muslim women to wear it." so i did a little reaserch on the muslim religion, which led me to look at other religions as well. at the same time, i started learning about history. the two had a destructive effect on my faith. i thought two things- how do we know our religion is right if there are so many, if god was real, then why did he/she let these things horrible events in history happen? an all- powerful being, full of love for all of his creations should have been able to stop hitler and pol pot in their tracks. little three year olds like my sister shouldnt have gotten cancer, and even though she survived, it was thanks to chemotherapy, not god. these things led me to belive this-
god is not all powerful. it does exist, and i say it because we have no way of knowing its gender- or if it has one. it did only one thing in its existance- it made the matter that exploded and created our universe in the big bang. after that, it could do no more. as for what happens when we die, i belive that we are reincarnated, by some prosess that will one day be explainable by science. i know this was long, but to people who read all the way through, it was good to get my religious views- which i have kept mostly to myself and those close to me- off my chest.

I saw this post and it caught my attention. I am glad I read it because at least I know I am not alone in the world. I believe everyone has the right to think and believe on whatever they want. I just want you to know I am with you. :)

I was born Catholic, but for a year or so ago I was a hardcore atheist--I despised religion and all of the lies it fed to its followers on morality and whatnot. My parents freaked when they got wind of it, though. So I'm stuck in the middle now. I've never been a particularly spiritual person, at least not in the traditional sense. I'm a humanist now, which isn't a religion so much as a philosophy--I believe that the most important thing about life is to spend it reaching out to others, whether it's through community service or just being a good example to others. Many religions follow this same doctrine; I just choose to not follow a god to that cause.

You know that's what all atheists need to realize, that being a good person doesn't mean your doing it for a god but in fact doing it just to be a good person.

      I'm atheist/Buddhist.
I'm atheist because I believe that Christianity makes absolutely no SENSE; and Buddhist for all the ideals it holds(not really for the supernatural stuff[then again, I'm not really sure]), such as being kind to everyone, always keeping a positive mind..etc.
      Just makes sense to me(:

How could God judge someone for being raised by their family for any "wrong" religion? I don't think so. I don't believe God cares what religion you are, but what's in your heart. AKA Karma..

    I hate mean, ignorant atheists.
They think they're so smart, and that they're "free." They always attack other religions, and do not respect other people's faith. A lot of people choose their religions. I was born into a family that practiced two different religions, and I have learned to respect other people's choices. Why do ignorant atheists even care about other people's choices? (I guess it's nice that they care).
If this comment gets over five thumbs down...
Then I have proved my point.

I don't have a problem with atheists at all, since many of my family members and friends are atheists, but I agree with you to a certain level. Lately, I've been noticing a surge of what I call 'aggressive atheists', I put them on the same irritating level as extreme/aggressive 'bible-thumpers'. They both seem to critise (aggressively) everyone that believe in something they don't believe in and do not appear to have respect for any other beliefs.

I know what type of atheist you are speaking of, they can get pretty annoying. I myself am not religious. I was raised catholic but separated myself from that because of many reasons, i've studied the various religions and still hold no interest in any of them. I do believe in feeling "free" so i do understand that part of atheism. But i will say that although i do not believe in a God or believe in being part of some form of religion, i respect them all for what they are. Everyone decides to be part of something for their own personal reasons. Some were raised into in and well... never really learned to suck themselves out of it because that's all they've ever known. But, if those religions are help people somehow, then good for them.

If we look at it both ways, atheists also feel the same way sometimes. I know it because where I study no one really speaks about religious until this very religious guy came and started messing things up. My atheist friend got mad because this guy thinks he KNOWS and that everyone around him is wrong and he is the only one right. So I think religious people and non-religious people argue over everything against each other. I know this is generalizing but.. That's how I feel. I respect every single person's beliefs even if I don't agree in any way so I expect people to respect my beliefs.

i am a proud christian, but i dont like it when people say "christians are hateful homophobic nutcases" look, some of us can be loonies, but i gotta say you should always respect other's opinions and dont shut them off just because they are different, i also will say that every single athiest i have ever met has been so uptight and hatefull towards all other religions and say they are ignorant, i respect other peoples choices, why cant you? im not saying thats how all athiests act but still...that is all i have seen so far
i guess i cant help but to think that my religion is the right one because, well honestly it makes more since to me, its the only religion with a god named simply God! i think The one and only God!
but i dont go around shoving my religion in people's faces, that seems rude and inconsiderate, occasionally i will state who i am and what i believe, and if anyone has questions or wants to know more about my religion/morals they will ask and i will gladly tell
    good day IIN :)

I am Christian but I am not fundamentalist. The world started with the big bang which was caused by God, on the earth, a planet of a third generation start with a slightly unusual planet system, life evolved from naturally occuring biological molicules and slowly evolved to multicellular and intelligent life. about 2 million years ago Homo Sapiens evolved.
However I also think that Jesus is the son of God (whether metaphorical or physical is irrelevant) and taught people how to live their lives for the benefit of others (e.g. no discrimination, abide by moral laws etc.) There have also been other people in history who have taught this message and this is good because it is a very similar message to that taught by Jesus. I accept the some people are aetheist and do not have a problem with them as individuals. However I think that religion is good for a society as it preserves moral values that can otherwise be lost.

I like to say I'm athiest, but recently it just irks me to have a religious label at all.
I was raised as a christian, but I can never remember a moment when I actualy believed any of it.
I actually went to church a few weeks ago with my grandmother. It was genuinely unenjoyabl...though I will admit that was partially due to me making myself miserable.

I really don't understand why what you do in your short lifespan would cause you to be punished for all eternity. Nothing you could possibly do would justify endless torture.

Oh, and Athiesm is in no way a religion-it's the overall lack of one.

I have the desire to love, learn, help, and embrace the positive in our world. i absolutely HATE when people think they are better than others, for any reason. I like to think that no matter what anyone's lifestyle is, I am willing to treat them with respect. (Obviously only if they are not attacking me or others). I also abhor when people try to impinge their own beliefs on others. I'm not a brilliant person, but i realize that there are distinctly positive things and frankly negative things.
Hatred, my own, is a negative thing that destroys me more than any other person. people should just realize that.

There's no such thing as religion. It's all a bunch of stories that one person made up in order to receive attention. I mean, who knew how to transcribe those stories then to have them be published in a book today? Have you ever played telephone? Shit gets fucked up along the way. I mean really? Eve ate that apple because she was hungry, not because there was a devil on her shoulder.
