What kind of books do you like to read?

I like to read non-fiction books about topics that are kind of "out there," like paranormal, metaphysics, scientific theories, alternative healing, etc. I'm always looking to learn about things that are on the fringe, but potentially plausible. But it seems when people look at my collection, they think it's either really interesting or really weird.

So, I'm curious. Do you read books, paper or electronic? And if you do, what topics do you like?

90% of what I read is to escape to worlds I'll never have an opportunity to experience. SciFi, fantasy, adventure stories like the Indiana Jones series, or even historical books of great adventurers like James Cook, Shackleton and Sir Francis Drake.
The other 10% are cruising guides for where we sail, instructional stuff about new products and boats.

You'd like my library. We have an extensive collection of metaphysical books as well as good conversation starters. And I can't seem to have just one book to read, I usually have at least three books going at once.

I do like nonfiction a lot. I read a lot of anthropology and history books as well as books on healing and gardening. Or how to books, i like learning. My favorite book is a chinese medicine book.

I don't have a prefered genre for fiction. As long as it's a good story. I'm not really into fluff novels. I enjoy a deeper meaning and authors who play with vocabulary. Books that make you think.

Have you read much Paulo Chuelo? You should if you haven't.

  • I read non-fiction books. I like to read scientific books that explain environmental phenomena as well historical books.

That being said I know I need to work on my right side of the brain. I was thinking once I am done with school I can start reading more fictional books.

  • History, poetry, political junk, etc.

    Current Reads:

Capitalism and its Economics: A Critical History - Douglas Dowd

The Politics of Reality: essays in feminist theory - Marilyn Frye

    Omensetter's Luck - William H. Gass

New and Selected Poems - Charles Simic

A Little Larger than the Entire Universe - Fernando Pessoa

I have so many books that I'll probably never read them all. I've got at least 5 - 6 more coming in the mail (Perry Anderson, Pablo Neruda, etc). I hope what Borges said about heaven being a sort of library is true - I'm going to need an eternity to get through my library as is!

      Ooh, are they any good?

I played the witcher 2 but the politics are so in depth I felt a little lost jumping straight in and was thinking of checking out the original source material

The audiobooks are amazing. The first one is called the last wish, it's a series of interconnected short stories based on what seem to be fairy tales, there's like beauty and the beast, snow white and stuff but really dark versions of them.

Horror or general drama fiction, a lot of older stuff like HP Lovecraft, I have a deep seated hatred for detective novels, from a young age I've been subjected to the same kind of CSI, law and order, ncis, rizoli and isles, castle kind of shows and long running novels based on the same detective and I just can't take it anymore, even Stephen king couldn't make me enjoy a detective novel,

My favorite book is one called a boy's life by Robert mccammon, it's a nostalgic and heartfelt look at childhood, mixed in with elements of the young mind's perceptions of fantasy and magic, racial tensions and the impact of a death in small communities.

It's a special book to me, I read it around 10 or 11 years old and enjoyed it but I found it a much more emotionally resonant read as an adult, also the book ended up back in our family under strange circumstances, and like the boy in the book I was young and filled with a innocemt fascination of the world and possible mystical thinking and I wondered if something unexplained had made sure the book made it's way back to us, of course that was bullshit haha
