What kind of pet does a cat make?

I've been wanting to get a cat for awhile now, but I'm taking my time and really thinking about it. After all, when my son gets out of high school the cat will likely still be around.
Anyway, which one of these positives/negatives stands out the most?

postives outweigh negatives of such awesome pet 25
low maintanence 22
scratched hands...carpet...furniture...etc 11
affectionate, amusing, beautiful companion 71
standoffish and self absorbed 12
hair, Hair EVERYWHERE! 9
litterbox=TOO SMELLY! 8
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'm a dog person but chose a cat because I'm single and out at work all day. Cats are good pets, but I'd avoid any pet you can't give adequate attention to. It's really not fair to the pet. The first principle is always "am I being fair to the pet"? It's about them, not you.

My kitty over 25 pounds (a real fat ass), but I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Cats are amazing! I have such a nice cat. He goes to the bathroom outside (thank goodness), only scratches his scratching post (they won't scratch furniture if you get them a cat scratcher), doesn't shed (he's a shorthaired cat), and he loves to be manhandled and given attention 24/7. You can cuddle with him as much as you want and he will NEVER scratch you, bite you, or anything. Oh, and he talks. Like whenever someone sneezes, he does two short little chirp-like meows, then if you say thank you, he does two chirps again. Cats are great!

  • I have two cats and one dog, but one of my cats is my favorite pet. He doesn't shed very much at all (my other one makes up for it though). He is so affectionate that I usually have to push him away. He is my only pet that is waiting at the door for me when I get home. He's smart too; he actually learn the commands that we taught our dog; like come, stay, lay down, etc. He never smells bad, ever. He's the best pet I've ever had.

it also depends on the cat type. there are some smart kind of cats that do as they told and there are some stupid kind that shits everywhere. but besides that the only problem i got with my cat is that he's curious and can break something from time to time and there is always hair on my cloths which is pretty annoying. oh and he refuses to eat cheap cat food =(

cats are like people, they all have different personalities.

the cat I have now is completely aloof and antisocial. but i've had cats that were very affectionate and total attention-whores. it just depends on the breed and how they're nurtured.

I love my cat more than anything. She is the coolest pet I have ever had. Granted, she gets curious and has to be bailed out of trouble once in a while, but for the most part, she is my best buddy.

I don't mind cats, but im allergic to them, and everytime I go round my bfs, mums house who has 2 cats, I have to take pills and spend the whole night coughing, sneezing, scratching and then showering and spend the night sleeping with breathing problems, and then the cat pounces on me in the morning, and then I need to put cream all over the rash it just gave me ha ha

My cat loves to be in my lap at all times lol. She is beautiful, sweet, loving, and she's smart. when she is out of kitty food she will go sit by the fridge, when she is out water she goes ans sits in the tub, and when she needs her litter changed she sits on the toilet.

also even though she's long haired she don't shed. she cleans her body very well. She's fix and declawed so no spraying and no scratched furniture. The litter thing is a problem though she tracks it everywhere, also she's bad about jumping in the toilet if the lid is open lol. She funny too not dull. She kills bugs and mice. and hair balls.... I've not seen her hack one up yet..... oh and she's bad about sleeping on my computer while I'm using it lol like now she is on the keyboard lol.

a cat that 'sprays' completely sucks, so when you do get a cat, make sure they are spayed/neutered as soon as they are old enough. A cat that gets it done too late can still have this tendency.
Every cat is different. Some are antisocial and scared of everything, some are overly playful and constantly moving, and every variation in-between. Really feel out the cat before you decide. Most animal shelters just have one big cat room, so you can watch them and have a chance to directly interact with 'em....and long haired cats do shed more.
Also, set your boundaries as soon as you get the cat home and be consistent. i.e. if you dont want the cat to jump on tables, get onto them as soon as they do it.

I hate cats. The litter box is a disgusting cesspool of...well feces. Is it okay if I poop in a box at someones house? NO! Who ever said that if you get them a scratching post they wont scratch furniture. Way wrong! They still scratch the sofa's and rip up the rug. Also I saw one gnawing on the Christmas Tree time after time when the owner kept screaming to stop and shooing it away. What an annoying animal. Not to mention the stink it creates and the disgusting fur balls or vomit bombs as I refer to them.

you can teach them to use a toilet. But Id only do it if it was a guest toilet I didn't use.

My cat sprays litter everywhere no matter what litterbox I buy, she yowls all day, scratches the furniture, and coughs hairballs on the floor, oh and eats/destroys every plant iv gotten. that's all the bad stuff, now the good stuff ; she's cute and super cuddley. That's it. Had I known this before I would not own a cat now.

yeah our cats never hack up hairballs but there is the litter thing, the scratching up furniture and other things (even though our older cat is getting a lot better at not doing that anymore), and destroying and getting at our halloween decorations, which again is mostly our younger cat but our big one does it sometimes too but they are very lovable and awesome and i luv em :)

I love my cat! He is a lovable goofy little furball and he makes me laugh. Some cats are more independent but mine is almost doglike he follows me around and listens to a few commands like 'come here" or "get down".
Yes they shed and the litter things sucks but all pets with fur shed and Id rather clean a box than take walks in the snow/rain with a dog. You can leave cats alone for a few days and they will be fine(though mine wouldn't like it).
For me having a cat improves my quality of life without too much extra responsibility. If you want something to take more care of and baby, Id suggest a dog, if you want something that doesn't need constant attention, a cat may be best.

Cats are amazing creatures, I totally recommend this. But be warned if you get a kitten, they poop A LOT. I wouldn't recommend declawing, it takes away their dignity. they're awesome pets so get one now! Or later, your call.

My cat is fine, she is fixed and declawed, so my furniture is safe lol. She does fall in the toilet sometimes lol I wnt say shes all tht smart. but she is better then a dog. at least she uses a litter box. u dnt have 2 freaking house break a cat u just stick them in the litter box a few times and they learn. so wut u have 2 scoop out a litter box but at least they dnt shit in the floor like a damn dog. I prefer cats over dogs.

My sister, Stella, had a kitty when we were kids. She'd lock it in my room at night and it would wee wee on my head when I was asleep.
