I speak Chirpish, Squawkanese and Tweetaly-dumb. Plus the occasional Kuckootanese.
I tried learning a little, and I probably said it was similar because of the vocabulary, I remember word order and declension being very difficult!
My native language is Dutch. The other languages I speak are English, German and French, and I can read and understand Afrikaans (since it is very similar to dutch). I also speak some spanish.
I noticed that about Afrikaans, for me the sounds were hard to put together reading and pronouncing the sounds. All I got was "ho han det?" and it's such a different spelling. Also "donkey"! Hehe
The Dutch in general seem to speak many languages...
Yeah their spellin is very different. you know what they mean but its written in a litteral kind of way. the word for barbeque if you translate is to english literally is (to) roast meat.
HAHAHAHAH that's one of the few I remember! I mean, are we talking about braaing? My friend and I first assumed it was "no wearing bras" in the swimming pool rules...
Yeah, in school we learn a lot of languages. German and French are pretty much obligated for the first three (depends per level and school) years of middle/high school. and we start to learn english in elemantary school and it is obligated all thoughout middle/highschool.
English is my first language, and I'm conversational in Welsh and French. I'm planning on learning Japanese and Spanish someday.
My first language is Finnish. I speak fluent english (please end me if I make an error in this comment) and very little Estonian language.
Native Spanish (Castellian), fluent English and trying to learn Weebonese
English natively and Spanish fluently. I also speak a tiny bit of French.
Ah sorry, my bad hahaha.
Because my mum and dad have a holiday home in the south of Spain so it seemed sensible to me to learn the language for 2 reasons.
1) communicating with locals
2) respect
If immigrants come to the United Kingdom I expect them to have at least a smattering of English conversational ability, so it's only fair to do the same in reverse when going abroad.
I speak English, Swahili, and some conversational Haitian Creole as I'm planning to study abroad there next summer! I know a bit of Spanish from grammar school, but guess who didn't study hard enough to retain much? Haha.
My native tongue is English, I have studied German in my youth, but I haven't retained much of what I learned. I've also been exposed to Spanish for much of my life because my mom is Colombian, but I can't really speak Spanish. Spanish has always been kinda hard for me.
Im Hispanic, but I can only speak English. Tried to learn Spanish a few times and failed.
I was born in the US but both my parents are Puerto Rican. They speak the language, but I don't.
I have taken two college Spanish classes and I did poorly both times. I did much better when I took German in High School. I will also say that I should have made A's in college German, but alas I was obsessed with my own personal life way too much, and was too depressed and anxious to function!
I'd give anything to go back in time if only I could turn off certain parts of my brain that distract me from academic pursuits.
I wish there was a procedure to take away the desire for companionship could have helped me in my youth.
I think I kind get that. I have cousins who were raised in the same area as me who can speak both Spanish and English. I guess they just payed more attention to what they're parents said than I did. XD
I have cousins who can speak Spanish too. ;-)
I also kinda got the feeling that my Colombian mom and Anglo-American dad who are both bilingual spoke Spanish when they wanted their privacy. I was fine with that, because I felt like so much of what my parents talked about was boring. I always just had headphones in my ears, and was in my own world inside my head. I think my father wanted me to take Spanish in high school and my my mother thought it was unnecessary, because she thought she could teach me. I never really wanted to learn from my mom though, because she's bossy and annoying. At least my mom supported me in taking German in High School, whereas my dad seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about all of it. To make matters worse I had an aunt who lived halfway across the country who was a math teacher and a chaperone for field trips to Europe, and she wanted me to take French. I guess there was a bit if a push for me to learn French so I could go with my aunt and cousin to Europe. BAH!
I think when it comes to electives it's best if the child chooses which courses he or she wants to study. I do think that it probably would be good if there was perhaps a requirement for American students to learn some Spanish, but I certainly wouldn't be asking my folks to help me study like my dad seemed to hope.
I also played the flute, because my dad could play the flute, and he had two flutes. However, I really wanted to learn to play the trumpet. My mom wanted me to learn to play the drums which was probably a good idea, but I never wanted to do what she wanted me to when it came to anything. I love my mom, but we never really got along very well.
I wish more people would let children choose their fields of interest in a more organic way rather than trying to influence them.
... meh.
Hahaha! I hear you! Story of my life! I try to keep away but then I catch the feelings by accident!
