Hawthorne sounds like a good name for a big black lab. (I voted for Duncan bc it was the best one on the list.)

Try names from mythology such as Zeus, Odin, Loki, Thor, Hades, Hermes, etc. There are many cool choices.

My dad is called Duncan, so I chose that. It would be a great feeling to know that a dog in some far off land had been named after my dad :)

Plus, Runty and Woobie sound like noises a baby makes before it can talk properly. They are not even real names!

People name their children after famous people (my middle name is after a film star), so why don't we name our pets after famous animals? Laika would be a good choice. The first animal of any species to orbit the earth. It means "barker" in English. Of the other Soviet cosmodogs, Chernushka (means "Blackie") or Ugolek (little piece of coal) seem relevant given his colour.

Although Laika and Chernushka were female dogs and he might not like a female name. Ugolek jointly holds the record for canine spaceflight (22 days) with Veterok (Breeze).

I had a black border collie once with a white stripe down his head, we called 'Badger' and another cross bred with extremely long legs called 'Colt' like a young horse.

If yours is completely black, what about Tarmac?
Or Scara? As in myScara (mascara).
Liquorice? you could shorten to liquor ;o)

We had a black and white border collie named Mirk. He was awesome. Mirk being a Scottish name, border collies being of Scottish origin. Darkness....
