Here are some I can think of, since all of these are for me perfect films:

    The Matrix

    American Beauty

    Brief Encounter

    Road to Perdition

    Amélie

    Tekkonkinkreet

    Terminator 2

    Aliens

    Die Hard

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

    Sixth Sense

    Pan's Labyrinth

Lord of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring

    Fight Club

    Chaser

    Let The Right One In

There are others. Even if they aren't all the greatest movies, they are flawless in so much as they are perfectly formed - the perfect length, pace, depth, scale etc.

I feel your pain. When people say "The most best" or "The most perfect" I cringe.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Wow, I didn't even realize that! How stupid! I'll never make that mistake again! I guess I should have said 'least flawed'?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • VioletTrees

How do you figure that's a grammatical mistake? I looked it up, and as far as I can tell, "most flawless" is the correct superlative of "flawless". It does mean something more like "closest to flawless", but I don't think it's actually incorrect. You could argue that it is, but since it's something that everybody understands and that doesn't hurt clarity at all, what's the point? It appears to have been standard usage for centuries now.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • dom180

I agree it doesn't really hurt clarity, it's just a pet peeve of mine because I see it, or versions of it, so often :P "Flawless" and "perfect" etc. are absolute superlatives, meaning you can't have degrees of them like the "most flawless" or "least flawless"; it's either flawless or isn't. If flawless means "no mistakes", "most flawless" would mean "most no mistakes". I'm not sure if that makes perfect sense the way I described it :P This describes it a bit better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_%28grammar%29#Absolute_adjectives

It is in standard usage, I'll admit. It's just one of those things that rattles my chains :P

        • VioletTrees

I understand why it would bother you, but I think changing it to "least flawed" COULD hurt clarity, depending on what the OP meant, simply because it changes the meaning of the question.

"What's the least flawed movie ever?" is a different question from "What's the most flawless movie ever?", especially when you consider that in the vernacular, "flawless" has come to mean excellent or fabulous, not literally free of flaws (note that this meaning is often used when discussing celebrities and entertainment, so it's usually reasonable to assume that this is the intended meaning in a post about movies). "What is the most flawless movie?" asks what movie we think is the most excellent, which is a measure of both the negative and positive attributes a movie. "What is the least flawed movie?", on the other hand, asks what movie we think has the fewest negative attributes.

Even if you're using a more literal interpretation of the word "flawless", "most flawless" still has very different connotations from "least flawed". "Least flawed" indicates that the speaker has a certain level of bitterness towards the subject. It conveys a sense of pessimistic compromise: the speaker is certain that no movie will ever meet their standards of perfection and is therefore willing to settle for whatever they dislike least. "Most flawless", on the other hand, makes the speaker sound more optimistic and enthusiastic about the subject. It indicates that there may be many movies that meet the speaker's standards, and that they're looking for the most excellent of those.

Note: I know, I know. When I say "the vernacular", that's the sound of me sweeping regional differences under the rug.

            -
          • dom180

I've only ever heard flawless as a synonym for "perfect" or "without flaws" before, but hey, a lot of words take on different meanings in society to their most literal definitions (possibly because of the natural human tendency toward hyperbole, but that's not important). I'm not saying that those definitions are any worse, but they're not so useful because when you deviate from literal definitions words start having different meanings to different people, and that leads to this discussion we're having now.

I don't think "least flawed" is exactly a great alternative to go with either, precisely because of the reasons you listed, but a good way to say it while keeping it simple would have just been "best ever" or "favourite ever", but those are less specific and don't hold the intended meaning precisely. Even better though, if you want to get the meaning of the title exactly the same as it was intended, "closest to flawless" would also work without having - at least in my entirely personal opinion - any negative connotations.

To the OP: I hope I'm not coming across as some "Queen's English is the Only English" obsessive about grammar, because that's the opposite of what I really am. Your way of writing it doesn't bother me, but I just thought I'd point it out. I'm also sorry for hijacking your cinematic discussion with a petty point about grammar :P

            Comment Hidden ( show )
      • I completely agree with dom on this. Once he pointed it out, I realized how stupid it actually sounds. Even though it's apparently common to say, I still wouldn't ever say it again now that I'm aware of it.

I'm not a wordsmith by any means so I don't always notice these types of things. If it were a math error or something along those lines, I'd be all over it but I do get tripped up on word choices from time to time. I'm taking it as a lesson learned!!

It gets confusing because they are portrayed by different actors throughout the film so as not to reveal the "truth" until the end.

Are you trying to vex me? This question is going to have me thinking for days!

I'm going to cheat and say Senna because it's pure documentary truth. So plot holes and suspension of disbelief don't apply. I could add Goodfellas (based on a true story).

But to play the game properly, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest never felt anything but real. Schindler's List too (although admittedly based on truth, you know what Spielberg is like), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Full Metal Jacket, Requiem for a Dream, The Sting, The Station Agent, When The Wind Blows.

Actually, that's my choice. When The Wind Blows. I'm choosing it because just thinking about this film disturbs me. Not because it's full of special effects and excitement and twists but because it's quiet and true. It's devastating because it's small, not because it's big. It doesn't lie because it doesn't need to. The small and inevitable truth it contains is, by its very casualness, earth-shattering. It's a very, very clever and manipulative film which makes a mess of me every time. It hurts because it's true. It's flawless for the same reason.

And I forgot Falling Down. I love that film. All that build up, step by step, and then the twist of the final weapon. I love how his life parallels Prendergast's, as well, in terms of petty annoyances and how it's actually Prendergast who strikes the blow by talking sternly to his wife, whereas D-FENS never really steps out of line apart from to defend himself (again, clever because of his career choice).

Eminently quotable too. What he says to the golfer about his hat is just wonderful. I wish they hadn't put the rocket launcher in, though. I know they kind of had to, to make a point, but it does stretch credibility. What a great film, though, and it all starts with a hot day, traffic problems, and a buzzing fly. :)

Oh, little factoid for you. You know at the start when D-FENS gets out of his car and that guy starts shouting at him before the cop arrives? The actor playing the guy shouting is the person who wrote the film. He had a decent career of bit parts in pretty big name American TV shows and things had dried up a bit so he wrote this (and yet gave himself only a bit part). I kind of love that. I also love that maybe the opening scene of the film really happened to him and inspired him to write it.

  • There are just two I have to keep coming back to.

Dunston Checks In and Operation Dumbo Drop.

The acting is sublime, the plot lines are riveting, and the animals give it a sense of innocence not easily achieved.

Yeah, the most flawless movie ever made has a plot that's been done to death, and doesn't even have an original spin on it.

CLEARLY the film with the most unoriginal plot in the world is the most flawless movie ever made.

Yes. There's Avatar the Last Airbender and James Cameron's version.

That is a tough movie to enjoy! Really well done though. Leo Fitzpatrick who plays Telly was in The Wire, all grown up, and it took me ages to realise who he was...
