What's the point of praying?

If God knows everything, I mean EVERYTHING, what is the point of praying? He already knows what's going to happen so praying over it won't change anything. He knows when everyone is going to die so praying to keep someone safe and alive is pointless. I don't get what the point of praying is.

is it normal to wonder this?

It's reassuring to people. Maybe they feel like they're getting it off their chest, and that it might be their only hope. If you believe in God and feel he can do something about their problem, then asking for something from him might not seem so futile to some, even if it is.

For example, when I lose something, I kind of half pray.:P Always over the most trivial of things. I'm not even religious either! I just run around in a frenzy saying "please God, where's my purse?! Help me! God damn it!":P And then I bargain, and say that if my purse pops up that I'll be a better person or something. Haha, it's *so* stupid. That is completely futile, especially because I'm a bloody atheist, so I don't know what good I expect it to do. I just do it when there's no other way to find the thing I'm looking for. It's sort of pointless, but it kind of helps. I really don't know why it would help me, though. And that's over unimportant things as well. I always overreact to the most frivolous things. God!

Haha, I noticed it. I kind of just make the assumption that everything you say to me now has "creepy intent":P. Maybe I don't want to indulge your creepiness, haha:P.

i pray by mostly thanking god for the things, people in my life, and of course when i or are another needs help etc. i never saw the reason to praying everyday until very recently. idk what other ppls reason are but praying helps me to always remember to be grateful and stay humble for what i have.

I've wondered that before, but the reason is because He wants a personal relationship with you. Sure he knows everything, but He wants you to make your own decisions. When you decide to pray, you're choosing to spend time with Him, and He listens to that.

If you are going to buy into the whole thing. The only valid thing to pray for would be forgiveness.

Praying is not for God's benefit, it's for ours. It's like talking to a very loving, forgiving, and powerful parent. If you need help with something or advice, you pray to God. It helps you in your daily life and you can get advice or be shown the way by the only being that really knows what is best for you

  • The point is the same as talking to someone who knows you well. To keep the relationship going

You have a valid point....God does know everything..I even feel in a way he plans out our lives...Some people are winners and some are losers...I feel that is a little bit of God plus our parents and maybe luck...You are correct..prayer won't really change Destiny!! it took me years to come to grips with that...It almost seems like God is unfair to some, maybe he is..I guess live your life the best you can and hopefully when you pass there is something pleasant for you on the other side.

It's not normal because normal people don't question things, they accept dogmas as they are, no matter how incoherent.

I believe in God but I kind of see where you're coming from. I don't ask God to do anything except watch over those who need it, and help me with my depression and anger issues if at all possible.

Well the point of prayer is not to Ask for things. prayer is Simple communicating with God. When you become a christian you allow God to be your Father and if He's your father why would you never talk to Him about things like a normal kid would do with their real dad? Look at what Jesus said "don't be like the pharasees and do long loud drawn out prayers to be seen. Go into descreatness and when you pray, say 'Our Father, who is in heaven: hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. The kingdom is Yours forever and ever .' There are no questions asked. God is all knowing. If you're a christ follower: follow the example of christ. Jesus gave basic prayer instructions. Talk to God about How holy He is and show Him appreciation, declare your basic needs to be met (food, safety, peace). Its not something to do only when u need a miracle. Christianity is about giving God glory, so we should ask and pray and believe (because WE dont know God will intervein. He knows all not Us. Some prayers will br answered not ALL bcuz then the need 4 faith goes out the window. God is not ignorant to the fact that people tend to abuse wells that are good for water & completly take blessings for granted and waste them because there's "more where that came from". ). God wants us to pray and hope in faith that He will come though and when he does He is glorified. If someone its healed and no one prayed to God for their healing, God gets no glory in that. Prayer is much more about God and our test of faith thenabout us bowing our heads closing our eyes in ritual

Just because you know what someone's answer is going to be, doesn't mean you don't have to ask. It's like if you want to borrow something from someone, even if you know they will say yes, you shouldn't just take it, you should still ask them politely for it.

People pray in order to be saved from Hellfire, where the heat is 70x more than our fire and the fuel of it are people and stones. Praying to anything doesn't help, praying to One God that's important.

  • Its called mediation. God is nothing but your subconscious. You are no better than the fundamentalist, radical knuckleheads who take the bible literally if you think that prayer is nothing more than attempting to communicate with some man that lives in the sky. Why do you think that every religion from every culture has its own form of prayer? Both individual and group meditation have been clinically proven to have theraputic value
