What would your anti-piracy measure be if you made a video game?

If I ever made a fighting game I would have something like the main character dying 50% faster and put something like:

Nice try go buy yourself the real copy you pirate, you cannot continue the stage, the stages can't ever be played by criminals. Oh and I've wiped off your saved data.

What about you?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Pirating frequently involves reverse engineering and modifying the "protection" features.

Honestly, I cannot think of any protective feature that could not be removed by common hacking of the original game software.

So, I'd keep it rather simple just to keep the mostly honest people honest.

You cannot stop piracy by security features.

Sensible answer. I would also do this.

Often the most "secure" games are the most pirated. Not to mention that the aggressive DRM garbage lowers the game's performance and eats memory faster than a fat kid celebrating his birthday at Mcdonalds...

I'd stick with basic anti-piracy measures and I won't have publishers. My company would be responsible for the marketing and distribution. Or just go with Steam... That way I can sell the game a bit cheaper, still make money and keep people happy.
Without giving a lions share to some greedy big publisher!!!

Kinda like Euro truck simulator (or any truck simulator, as they are all made by the same company)... It's a game made by SCS software in the Czech Republic that sells for 20-30 Euro. You could pirate it, but you'll miss out on updates, mod support and small DLCs.

Pirating an EA game with it's hundreds of DLCs makes sense, cause nobody wants to pay 200 bucks for a game, with the Sims 3 being a particularly good example (490USD for game + all DLC, or 74000USD for absolutely everything).

But everyone can spare 30 bucks for a good game.

Very hard to kill miniboss just randomly shows up in the first 30 minutes. If the charicter beats it you just instantly win the game and then after the credits the game deletes the save file.

I’d make a shit game, then nobody would pirate it.

There's a reason people despise games with required internet connection. It inconveniences everyone who buys the game, as well. You can't play them after the servers get shut down; you can't play them if your internet is down. You can't play them if the servers decide to break randomly; you can't play them if your internet is being weird. Required internet connection is absolutely hated amongst the gaming community, at least for single player games.

My game would be so popular that people would be willing to put up with it. In small print somewhere I'd also mention they're only paying for a subscription and I can update the game how I want, or remove it entirely.

That's how you get to be known as absolutely obnoxious when it comes to policies of that variety. It's not a very kind thing to do. That's how you end up, years later, with a free remake of your game that everyone claims to be way better than the original, in most regards.

Same thing an older game did. Add a few insanly tough enemies that won't die making the game substantially harder. If possible id also make it so there's a fraction of the normal healing items.

Like olderdude said, anti-piracy is extremely ineffective at preventing piracy. I say, let them pirate the game, and if they choose to pay for it out of respect for their fellow humans, they can do so.

So let me get this straight...

Allowing stealing is ok. Allowing abortion is not.

Despite both "stealing" and "murder" being something the 10 commandments say not to do...

This shit is why I say you're a fucking hypocrite.

I am not condoning stealing; I'm saying that the attempts to stop piracy using anti-piracy measures don't work, so it's pointless to bother trying. Neither of those two things is okay. They are both mortal sins, though murder is worse.

And the same principal applies to abortion...places who have unobstructed, legal access to abortion have less abortions overall.

Incorrect. Your bible says that all sins are equal in your god's view. Thinking about something is equal to doing it. Also, your god is pro baby murder, sooo....

If you are making reference to James 2:10, that not the message of the verse. I think that the Douay-Rheims Bible explains the meaning of that verse far better than I can:

""Guilty of all;": That is, he becomes a transgressor of the law in such a manner, that the observing of all other points will not avail him to salvation; for he despises the lawgiver, and breaks through the great and general commandment of charity, even by one mortal sin. For all the precepts of the law are to be considered as one total and entire law, and as it were a chain of precepts, where, by breaking one link of this chain, the whole chain is broken, or the integrity of the law consisting of a collection of precepts. A sinner, therefore, by a grievous offence against any one precept, incurs eternal punishment; yet the punishment in hell shall be greater for those who have been greater sinners, as a greater reward shall be for those in heaven who have lived with greater sanctity and perfection."

All sins are not equal. The idea that they are is a complete misinterpretation of the Bible. Also, when you say God is pro-baby murder, if you are referring to Genesis 22, notice that this is what happens immediately before Abraham kills Isaac:

"[10] And he put forth his hand and took the sword, to sacrifice his son.

[11] And behold an angel of the Lord from heaven called to him, saying: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. [12] And he said to him: Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing to him: now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for my sake. [13] Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw behind his back a ram amongst the briers sticking fast by the horns, which he took and offered for a holocaust instead of his son."

There have been times where God did kill children, but he was also wiping out the whole rest of the population of the cities they were in as well.

I doubt your claim about more abortions taking place where abortions are illegal.

I can see the problem here, Clunk. Malicious sperm homicide also breaks a link of the chain, according to your Catholic interpretation. And through neglect, you have wiped out millions of spermlets through your grievous nocturnal emissions. Your great anxiety that you will never reach heaven is gravely warranted.

You are starting to realize what God has known since the beginning of time; which is that your name is NOT in the Book of the Living.

I would do like acid studio did with their game (Darkwood) I would place a free copy of my game for download and if ppl liked my game and wanted support me they could buy it.

because not everyone have money to buy it.
I really like that indie games are growing because if they dindt we would be spending a lot of money on mega corporations that keep placing extra taxes just to play their games like "video game assets" or "DLCs" that are needed just to play a single game.
