When you first discovered iin, did you think this too?

I happened upon this site and haven't been able to leave! And the whole time I am reading people's stories and polls, I'm saying to myself, "Man, I wish the internet was around when I was growing up!" I think I would be a totally different person if I had a place like this to realize I wasn't crazy, weird, alone or sick-minded when I was younger.(well, maybe a little hahaha). What a difference it would have made. *On the other hand, I curse the internet quite often, having children. Trying to protect them but not shelter them is an ever-changing struggle...so, my very 1st question to all of you is:

Does anyone else, who grew up without the internet think some of those things too? Is that a normal experience for some of you?

  • I DID have the internet while I was growing up. That is why I am crazy, weird, alone and sick-minded.

My first thought was "YESSSSSSSSSSSSS, I'M NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!"
I grew up with the internet so I'm full of useless facts and now I have left school the internet seems to be my new teacher; "I wonder if a pregnant dog takes a pregnancy test will it actually work? Google."

  • My father recently showed me some pictures of him and some chums from the 1970s. I was amazed because they, and I mean everybody in the photos, were very thin. Or what we'd call thin today. I thought it odd and asked him about it-why he and all his friends were so skinny. (He is over six feet tall and in the photos weighed 160 pounds) A bit naive I admit.

He said that's the way everybody was before the internet. Thin and fit was the norm.

To the OP, I didn't think this being the first story I ever read on IIN was about someone who put a small cut on the end of his penis, so he can use the blood as lubricant while he masturbates. So my very very first thought about IIN was "WTF?"

I grew up before the internet was invented. I'm in a quandary. I appreciate having the Internet greatly. And also thinking back when I was a teenager, the world seemed to be a much bigger place. The world today appears to be a smaller place with the Internet. News from everywhere in one spot. Twitter this, twitter that. If I wanted to see or speak to a friend I ran down the street and knocked on their door.

I don't know if I'm getting across what I really mean. It's in my head but it's not coming out right.

I worried to death when my kids were in their teens and a social website popped up. Way before Myspace. Nothing happened but as a parent you still worry.

    Take care

  • I think people under 18 should go on to the internet, have a computer or a mobile phone. All it is doing is making them dependent on electronics and should be given time for their brain to function to its fullest. Of course alot of teens/children will complain that shouldnt happen but that just goes to show im right I mean whats the big deal if someone cant text their friends with gossip etc?

        • Technology is evolving. The human race isnt.

          • Development of the human brain is influenced and affected by stimuli during formative years. Enzymic and hormonal impact brought forth by this stimuli can lead to certain areas of the brain being more active or even larger than other areas. Children of the web might be good typists, but are retarded emotionally and socially due not to a lack of socialization but to actual changes in brain chemistry.

So in 10,000 years descendants of the web will have a visual range of two feet, twelve fingers, no legs and be unable to talk.

            Now that's evolution.

yep. I fully believe in this notion, but honestly, every time I go into public, I struggle to comprehend peoples stupidity and it results in me isolating myself once again back onto the internet. humans suck, I am about to get a wall-e and call it day.

          • Management that was me basically trying to make an ending comment to stop the replying. When I reply to people I usually dont want to but do it out of respect to the person replying to me because they replied looking to communicate with me. My reply wasnt to start an argument or a disscussion infact I wanted to say something else but would of been against our agreement which is why I said "why are you replying to me" in hopes that they wont and the brain thing I was only trying to make a friendly joke by stating the obvious. My reply was in no way an attack or any part of an argument and I hope this comment explains that.

I'm fascinated by the idea that there are people half my age who are on this website and, and are the age I was when we first got the internet (and we're still the same generation, fancy that. Anyone remember Comm 64s and Windows 3.1? Yeah baby, the internet for lay people came after that.

It's a double edged sword, like the OP said. Knowledge is empowering, but then again, this is the internet.....(most of it's crap! but there are gems floating around).

Still I like the idea of actually being able to get away...like properly. Mobile phones and the internet took that from us.

  • Yes. I think the Internet and the World Wide Web(the software that runs on it)are fantastic. I am blessed and grateful to be born at a time whereby all of these opportunities are opening up and I am able to see the recession of brick and mortar gigs in favor of virtual careers, seeing as how I am a bit of a misanthrope and never could stand office politics, drama, or douchebag coworkers.. And, the fact that global communication is sooooo astounding; that we are able to communicate with and to befriend people on this planet that, prior to the advent of the Internet, we would never have known...that is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I think I would be a very unhappy camper if I were not provided with this tool to rant, to vent, and to reach out to others and to life opportunities.
