I second that.
I use one at work (the older Curve and the newer Curve) and not only is the interface clunky (how many fucking buttons and navigations should I have to deal with just to call a number from my contacts list!?) but they're pretty buggy.
I've used an iPhone and, despite my severe dislike of Apple, have to admit it was pretty good. Apart from the Kindle, all my small devices are either Android or Linux or Windows Mobile. I don't like the new versions of Windows at ALL and Linux isn't really big on phones, but I could recommend Android. I use various versions of it and, although it's occasionally a bit buggy, it's a very minor and temporary annoyance. And it's a lot cheaper than Apple's overpriced kit.
I'm not actually sure what the whole problem is with windows 8 phones. I have found them very easy to use once you get used to the new interface, which is true for all OS's.
As for an actual suggestion, if you want the freedom to change your phone in any way you want, anything but Apple. If you don't care about changing things and customizing your phone, then Apple is fine.
Each one has their advantages and disadvantages though. I'd suggest just visiting somewhere that sells phones and putting each through their paces. It's a personal choice after all.
I dunno, just whatever you do, stay away from Windows 8 systems. ICK!!! :O
The last phone I had was an iPhone, and I liked it a lot but that's all I have to say. I hate the fact that is almost made of glass.
