Which is a better pet?

Okay well im planning on getting a new pet! :) i just cant choose between two gerbils or a hamster. I've done research on both. I've read that hamsters tend to be mean? Is that true? I want to able to pet and hold my pet, so which one would be more social?
Thanks a lot! :)

I'm going to have to break the rules here and say ferret. They are awesome. Fun. Cute. Mischievous. Ferrets!!!! A few people Ive come across assume ferrets are nasty because the ones they met were. None of mine were/are mean. Maybe its how I socialized them with other ferrets and people when given the chance. And you just can't beat the weasel war dance! And the chattery noises. Too cute :)

I agree, plus I've had personal experience with hamsters and gerbils and they're both antisocial. Ferrets just want love and attention. And as long as they get those things they're as perfect as they can maintain.

What's funny about that is how many people in California have ferrets anyway. It's bullshit though, they can take their "sensitive ecosystem" and shove it up their asses. What harm would a ferret do?

I think it has something to do with some animal rights organizations protesting the legality of all caged rodents.

I'll have to remember to look that up, I heard it was something about concerns if they get out and effect the food chain or something.

The funny part about that is that domesticated ferrets wouldn't last more that 3 days in the wild because of the fact that they're nearly fearless and they have poor eyesight. They wouldn't be able to overrun the ecosystem.

Uhhh gerbels are waay more sociable than hamster, not to mention less expensive. Also hamster die quicker if they dont sleep all day. My friend had like 6 hamsters already and shes only 13

I would go for the two gerbils! Hamsters are so cute but they bite. I know it wasn't listed as an option but rats are probably the best choice and as far as temperament: intelligent, affectionate, gentle and social. I remember a friend of mine and I used to always debate rats vs gerbils. So I would whole heartedly endorse gerbils if rats are not an option. Hamsters are nice to look at but not so nice to hold and play with. I remember being at a Petsmart in Mississippi about 15 yeas ago who they got a shipment of rodents in and the lady putting them in the tanks had no problem with the mice, rats and gerbils but she didn't like handling the hamsters cause they would bite.

Hamster! I had a hamster when I was about 10 and I loved my hamster. You should get one. They're not mean at all, at least mine wasn't.
