The fact that "I'm on a stairwell" is winning doesn't inspire much confidence.

    I am the stair well..........

  • Hmmm, a stairwell isn't just stairs, it's a room with stairs, so I'd have to go with: I'm IN a stairwell.

If it was a just a staircase, then I would say I'm ON the stairs.

WE ARE CORRECT lol end of debate. <I am aware this sentence is not gramatically correct. While I do know a lot about grammar, I'm not in fact a grammar nazi ...

Oh noes, I've said it too many times to myself and now I think the phrase sounds weird.

But hell, poll creator, go with me on this and say you're on a stairwell. Although you wouldn't be corrected anywhere if you used either or.

Polyamoury32 has it on all counts.
You can be ON the stairs, but if those stairs are IN a stairwell, then YOU are IN the stairwell ON the stairs.

Be sure to include all the words relevant to the question: *write* or *say*

    Got it?

Which is the grammatically correct way to *write* this?
Are you not in the stairwell, i.e. they (the stairs) are under you, which would mean you are on the stairs?

I think on since you are standing on the stairs. However if it is one of those in which its like a separate room I guess in. So I guess they are both correct. Since you are in the area in which the stairs are located but you are standing on them. So you are on the stairs. I am sorry for being no help this question has confused me.

I'm in the stairwell. It's like saying, "I'm in the house." You wouldn't say you were ON it unless you physically climbed your tail on the roof. Well the stairwell is a place containing the stairs. Therefore, it's a place to be IN. Not on.

When I saw stairwell, I saw staircase :/

  • im lurking in the stairwell looking up. listening . no not today, then i'm walking out of the stairwell . if i was on the stairwell i'd be on the roof looking down and tearing my note into little pieces and watching it flutter to the street below

I'd say the stairwell is the area containing stairs so, like the posters above me, I'd go with "in" too. Especially because it's bounded on six sides; four walls, a ceiling, and the stairs themselves. You're inside it.

I'd say in, as in you could be in a well like a room.
