Who do you consider to be “white”

Saw this conversation get started on another post but was curious to see people make a more direct stance

Who do you consider to be a “white person” in your opinion ?
I *think* I remember hearing about the Irish being “treated as non-whites” in American history.
Some considering Finns and Slavs as “Asian” despite some being light skinned, haired, and eyed.
Jews have always been up in the air, Italians I think recently have been ‘questionable’ in some dumb internet debate

Who people consider to be “white” seems to be different based on region. With some people being “science-based” on pure genealogy and ethnicity, and others basing it on simply how you look. “White-passing” is a new thing I’ve heard.
Do you see ‘race’ as a social construct ?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Anyone that looks whitish I guess, everyone is mixed at base so I have no need to assign it to races and groups.

I’m not into race differentiation, and tribalism is really nothing more than a redundant evil.

If Irish people aren't considered white then it's definitely a social construct. They're so pale.

I always considered "White" to mean people of European descent. But you also have Russia, which extends all the way into Asia, and the Caucasus region, which actually encompasses both Europe and Western Asia.

From my understanding, most of the European races are now 100% considered white. Italian, Irish, Slavic and Mediterranean people have all received different levels of "whiteness" but as of the 80s; all white.

The Irish are the n*ggers of Europe. And for Italians, Italians that immigrated to Quebec in the olden days were called W.O.PS. meaning. Without official papers.

My great grandmother hated Italians. Literally only group of people she hated. Died right before I was born but that's the gist of it. Thought my dad and uncles were getting sick from pizzas.

The Irish weren't treated as non-white. They were treated as non-Protestants (that is, Catholics). The early American population was very distrustful of Catholics. I suppose a comparison could be made regarding the particular type of treatment that would entail, between non-whites and Catholics.

"The Irish weren't treated as non-white."

Wrong. They absolutely were, as they were often referred to as "Negroes turned inside out."

Such as the era of secret societies.

Something tells me that the modern secret societies had all the fun sucked right out of it.

Not necessarily, it all depends on how interested in aliens one is. Did the aliens give Uncle Bernie the old anal probe?

I'm half Italian, half English by heritage and have always answered 'White' or 'Caucasian' on documents.
As far as I'm concerned, I look white so I'm white. If another Italian doesn't look as white, then it's up to them what box they want to choose- but my skin complexion and what box I tick isn't up for any debate.

In my neck of the woods most people assume someone is white if their skin is pale. I'm a light skinned Puerto Rican and other Hispanics refuse to believe I'm Hispanic. They usually think I'm Polish or Irish because apparently White Hispanics aren't a thing. I don't get it. XD

I knew a guy in the navy who looked like a full blooded italian. He said he was 50% african. We all said that was bullshit. Then... he told us to look at his hands, weird I know but holy hell did was it apparent from the hands that he was mixed.

        Interesting. XD

What's weird about my look is that people who are considered white seem to be the ones to recognize I'm Hispanic. My sister has told me it's my frizzy hair that gives it away. Though it doesn't explain why other Hispanics don't see it. XD

Yeah it's funny. I wouldn't consider people from say Western Europe to be of all different races, they're all just white/European (apart from non-indigenous people living there obviously). But there is still racism between a lot of those different countries, eg. between Ireland and England. So maybe it should be called a different word if the two nationalities look identical (like xenophobia). It's still just as bad as racism against someone who looks different to you, but it causes this kind of confusion then.
