Why are or aren't you religious?

This is mostly for those with a religion. I seriously want to know why because sometimes it confuses me how people can be hard-core Christians always attending church and partaking in lent and other whatnots. By the way, I'm atheist/agnostic.

Not religious - science dispels any notions of "God" 31
Religious - to have something to believe in/pray to 14
Not - all the religious beliefs just seem too stupid/far-fetched 30
Religious - it seems plausible and so I stand by it 9
Religious - God is REAL period! 24
Not Religious- other 21
Religious- other 17
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'm not religious. I'm pretty much Agnostic...I don't know know if there's a God or not, and frankly I don't care. As long as we're decent people, who the hell cares if there's a god?

Well, I'm Catholic, but not traditional, I have my own beliefs that the church wouldn't see fit, but the reason I have my faith is because I see no reason at all not to believe. There is too much evidence in it's favor, on at least my behalf. You can believe differently if you wish, but to me, God is definitely real, and He's got my back.

I have no reason to be religious.

    I'm an agnostic atheist:

Agnostic because I can't be 100% certain there is no God. Perhaps some form of God does exist but that can't be proven and the human mind can't conceive of it.

Atheist because I don't believe in any God. A lot of people think atheists believe there definitely is no God, but that is not always true. Atheism by definition is simply lack of belief in God, however some atheists may be more narrow-minded than others, and claim they are 100% sure.

Hard core religious = guy who goes to Church?

Hmm. Well I agree with the Christian Philosophies more or less because I saw the affect it had on those in my life and how loving they were.

Of course I back up my beliefs with Reason but in the end cold logic never impressed anyone into a belief- if you believe something you believe it ultimately because you like the Idea of It.

The two aren't exclusive. You can/not believe in a deity and follow the teachings of the Buddha. It's outside the cycle of divinity.

    Not religious. For this reason:
Ever since I have been introduced to religion, I have always thought it wasn't real. When I was 5 I remembering attending a sort of 'church class' for kids. All the stories I heard were fun to listen to, but I just couldn't see how someone could really turn water into wine, or split the sea. When I grew up I just started to put less and less thought into religion, and ended up not caring about it whatsoever.

I'm an Agnosto-Deist; which is to say that I do not know if there is or is not some sort of higher being, and that if there is one, this being takes no part in human events. After all, the universe is so large and varied, such a being would have trouble concentrating on us, we would be like bacterium to it. Tiny and insignificant.

    Hiya,

I am disabled. I've come into contact with people who are even worse off than me; they can't talk, can't eat, they have to have something put in drinks to be able to drink – and they used to be fine. I can't see how any God would want that to happen.

If you play me a good blues/spiritual song I’ll more than likely love it, which confuses a lot of people. I've even had a healing song sung over me -– mind you there were lots of other people in the audience as well.

As a student of science, there is no way to disprove God so therefore the concept of God does not even fall in the relm of science. In Buddhism, which I grew up in, there is no God to be worshipped but it also doesn't say that there is no God. But I often wonder too why people want to believe that there is a God so much.

I believe in science and the logic about how the world works. But I am also spiritual, because there are times when I just feel that there is some higher being guiding certain people.

Im a Christian, simply because I believe in God. I understand that there's no proof one way or the other. Its just what I believe and if anyone disagrees I respect that! No need to argue over something everyone will always have their own opinion on.

I'm probably not as religious as I should be because I'm constantly surrounded by people who aren't religious, and my dad is very religious and kind of sort of tries to implant it in me and my brother's head (Religion is very important to him, but he doesn't seem to accept the fact that my brother is atheist).

  • I consider myself a free thinker. I do believe there's something more..I'm in a lifelong quest to figure out what that is.
I also know that the Earth is spherical, it's about 4.5 billion years old, and we share common ancestors with apes.

I am a Christian and I believe that God was the reasoning behind the Big Bang. I believe that God, being all powerful created this universe therefore created primal bing that evolved into what we are today.

      • I'm always surprised at how many people insist that those two concepts must be exclusive. When I read Genesis, I see a metaphore that explains the Big Bang and Man's creation through Evolutionary processes. I believe that we were created in His image...not necessarily that He looks like an ape as much as that we were given the gifts of compassion, empathy, and the ability to love. Isn't God, by biblical definition, Love?

It is not all that difficult to understand.
What one must do, is to separate in your own mind, what is real and what is an abstract thought.
Religion, Atheism and Agnosticism are all abstract thoughts.
Religion has been developed to try to explain real phenomena that primitive people did not understand. These sometimes led to elaborate explanations (abstract concepts), often incongruous with the real Physical Universe. People sometimes developed rituals, sometimes quite elaborate, in conjunction with these abstract concepts.
There is SOME basis in reality for the development of Religious thought, and by extension, Atheist and Agnostic belief. If you wish to understand the real Universe, you must acknowledge this and admit to yourself that you (usually because of things you have learned from others) might have been incorrect. This applies to EVERYONE.
