Why are people so afraid to be associated with what they write online?

If you wouldn't stand by it IRL why post it online? Is it really that important to your life that you are able to be a troll online?

People will say things like "I could get fired", well if that's the case you either have a shitty job or you are a shitty person who deserves it. But most of the people who are against this don't have jobs anyway. So what are you afraid of?

It's also funny when they think that impedes freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the social ramifications of being a dumbass. You can say whatever shit you want, but be prepared to defend your stupidity if it's that important to you. Don't go crying "censorship" just because people suggest you stop being an idiot.

  • I'm not really using my anonymity to be a dick online. I feel more free to be relaxed and say my opinion because, unlike real life, you won't have someone on your ass for every little thing.

Many other people feel like this too. I think that internet anonymity is great, because it allows us to truly see what the public really thinks.

Internet anonymity is great but, at the same time, anonymity can bring out the worst in people when they believe their actions will go without consequence e.g. the people who swat streamers.

It's a privacy issue. Do you realize how many predators troll the web looking for victims. Both for financial gain and physical or mental harassment and stalking. Get real. What your talking about will never happen.

  • Why the fuck are you having a dumb ass conversation with yourself. You are an idiot.

It was a conversation with me. He downvoted every one of my responses 5 times then hid them. So I deleted them.

In it he admitted to being banned multiple times. Probably why he hid them. His or her comments remain.

      • Ahh that makes more sense then. He/she still sounds like an idiot though.

People are snoody stuck up fucks. They will judge and gossip if you speak what you really think.

I do it because there are some things in my life that no one knows and sometimes it feels good to put away a burden.
There are things in my life that are not necessarily bad things I do and I don't tell, but just very personal stuff that I like and need to share with a bunch of people who don't know me and don't need to buy a face on a name!

There is a lot more to this issue than most people think. I know I feel a lot safer online being relatively anonymous because I never felt safe in real life. I wasn't ever like...big or anything. While most of the other boys were like, "FOOTBALL!!" I was doing gymnastics and when I graduated at 17 I was only like 118lbs and 5'4"ish with my shoes on. I was the only transgender person in town and I kept it a secret because I lived in a small rural community. I knew I would get beat up or to death if anyone knew about it.

The last thing I want to do with my anonymity is be a jerk or a dick with it. I'm messed up though, I was about to be assaulted by a group of guys in college when a cop pulled up and I apologized to them while I was leaving...I mean how do people be mean to other people? Don't any of them know what it feels like to be treated like you're worthless?

Yet you respond to comments anonymously

    • Because it tells you that I'm the post author. It makes more sense than looking like I'm just some random person replying. Besides, all usernames are anonymous too. And I don't have a set username on this site.

You have to have a user name to submit a question on this site.

Also we will see your post history, be able to see how long you have been here and we will be able to collate it all and send it to your boss, your parents, grandparents and everyone, once you give us your identity.

This is what you are wanting so let's do it! It will be a good test.

If it goes smoothly your idea has merit.

        • I have no post history, that's what I'm saying. This is not my only nor my original account. My accounts keep getting banned.

My parents, grandparents, bosses, etc. are aware I use this site and couldn't care less what I write on here.

What I'm wanting is that no one will be anonymous, not just me. So would you be willing to disclose your identity once you "collate it all and send it" to them? Otherwise, this wouldn't make much sense except to prove the only reason you need anonymity is to discreetly be a douche.

There are already people on this site that know my identity.

I want to keep my personal life my own because it's rational to do so, as I have explained.

It's your theory, you be the test subject.

            • That makes no sense though. I'm saying no one should be anonymous, how is one person not being anonymous going to be testing a theory? What theory are you even talking about?

That's ok. There are users who have been here for a decade. Just list your past user names and they will be able to figure it all out for you.

Putting your name and address down on this site is beyond idiotic, And doing it because they think it makes them look badass, way way beyond idiotic.

Honestly I have no idea. If I had to take a guess I'd say that maybe because people feel insecure about they're own opinions. As for myself, well, there's not really any difference of what I say through Internet and what I say in real live. So yes, if I say something to someone online, no matter how rude or harsh it may be, you can expect I'll do the same thing face to face. Of course, I'd say it with the same calm I have with any conversation.

The thing is, some people say things online that they don’t normally say in person, mainly because they don’t want to deal with the repercussions. Because of the anonymity, they are comfortable speaking their minds and their true colors come out.

I'm old enough to remember life before dumb shit like this site and others.

  • What did I do? I lived my life?

Why can't you ask people those same questions while not hiding your identity?

Why do you think your boss would have a problem knowing you talk about mental health/sex related things? Does he/she not have sex or understand that mental illness exists?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I wonder what people like you did before sites like this existed

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • So why do random people online need to know about your sex life or depression?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • So then what're you afraid of?
I seriously don't understand why people are so against the idea of the internet supposedly not being "anonymous" anymore. The only people I can think of to be negatively affected by that are dumbass losers who need to get a real life anyway. It wasn't that long ago we all lived without anonymous message boards online. It wouldn't be that fucking detrimental to society to lose them

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I don't use any social media.

Most of the internet is anonymous sites.

I'm not purposefully obscuring anything, like you said this is an anonymous site, so that's the default.

The original question is asking why people are so upset that their anonymity could be taken away. The only reason I can think of is that they won't be able to waste their lives being disgusting assholes anymore because they'd be too insecure to do so.

And so far you have provided no counter argument to this.

  • I'm saying I wouldn't give a shit if people I know irl saw what I post online, otherwise I wouldn't have posted it. You don't know me irl so me telling you who I am would do nothing. You're just trying to act tough.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Uhm, no?
I'm talking about removing anonymity from everyone on the internet. If it was removed THEN you could see my name, and I wouldn't give a shit because I don't know who the fuck you are. You have no impact on my real life. To post "who I am" right now makes no sense to your argument as it would do literally nothing, because you have no idea who I am in reality even if I were to tell you.

  • I don't masturbate or get drunk, and everyone takes a shit so I doubt someone willingly watching a live stream of my life would be surprised by seeing a human shitting. Why would you want to see a live feed of a person you don't even know?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Who am I? I'm just a person you don't even know, so stop trying to act tough over the internet.
