Why are so many people on this website mean to eachother???

A lot of the time sarcasm and humor does not translate well into text.

Also we are overrun with trolls.

OTHER: Some people are just plain stupid and need a good kick in the keister to bring reality home :)

I think the mean ones are in a minority, but just perhaps the most vocal contributors.

Is that the definition of a troll?

Same reason a lot of people are mean on the internet. When you've got hate in your heart but lack the balls to express it irl, getting it out of your system online is the next best thing.

I'm sorry if you've ever interpreted my comments as mean. Honestly, less than 3% of everything I've written on this site was intentionally hostile. I went through all of my comments once and counted them before arriving at that statistic (true story). My humour doesn't translate well here at all. Most of the time, I try to help or tease light-heartedly, but I do have moments where my patience with some people wears thin.

From my perspective, only a handful of people on this site are assholes to the core.

It's actually only a couple of people with multiple accounts. You can tell because the level of retardation is similar from one to another. There aren't that many tools on here 'cept for tha badass keyboard warriors that don't give a fuck hahaha.

Criticism in one thing, but just being mean, for meanness sakes, is ridiculous.

Most of them are juden, they have no feelings and therefore no souls. so it is ok to say mean things in return to them. after all hitler was a jude, and look how "evil" he was.

I have mixed feelings about this issue. To be honest, with the quality of some post, people are basically begging to be trolled. If people are going to keep posting stories about having a crush with their best friend or their teachers, they should at least put some twist so that it is actually interesting to read it. And obviously, they should write something intelligible as well.

However, I have also seen people just being plain mean in posts which obviously were written with a lot of care, which is really sad sometimes, because you can actually see how they truly pour their feelings in their lines!

Anomie. The society of IIN is fairly rigid and rule-governed, and it's quite difficult for the extremely wide spectrum of individual personalities here to express themselves because the only medium we have is text. There is also no strong collective identity (there used to be, but it's definitely waned) to hold the society together. When you have all those things you have an increase in anti-society behaviour, which sociologists often call "anomie".

Despite that, I think most of us are nice to each other and even when we bicker (which is inevitable) most of us don't hold grudges except in extreme cases.

I've been here off and on for 4 years. The ratio seems to be the same.
I don't understand why people can be mean either.
I did have a nice day! Sun was shining, hummingbirds busy at their feeders, my dogs play together nicely, got my nails done and have bestest BFF.

I try to not get into arguments on here. I posted this link a little while ago in response to an unsavory character prowling the comments the other day, but feel it is appropriate to do so here.
