Why do people check "sounds" out in horror movies?

if in a situation they have to like robberies and the father has to protect the family. or if someone lives alone, etc. i guess that's fine

but in Ghost/paranormal movies. why? are they tryna jump scare us or get possessed by some entity. they get out of bed and hear something so they go check what the "sound was". dumb question ik

      Also if I hear a sound in my house I'm grabbing a gun or other kind of weapon.

    So the excitement will build when they go to check it out, and then they get killed and it will make it more exciting.

    Same reason they only shoot the killer in the leg while he "shockingly" gets back up and runs after them.

        no they shut off the car and either lose the key or it just cranks & cranks and wont start again

        also at some point a cat jumps outta the shadows and makes the exact same screechin cat noise as every movie and sound effects cd
